Tillie Walden To Be Appointed Vermont’s Fifth Cartoonist Laureate


MONTPELIER, VT—Norwich resident Tillie Walden will be appointed Vermont’s fifth Cartoonist Laureate on Thursday, April 13, 2023, when she will be recognized on the Vermont Statehouse floor.

Walden is one of the most celebrated and accomplished cartoonists working today. She won the 2018 Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work for her graphic novel memoir “Spinning,” making her at 22 one of the youngest Eisner Award winners ever.

Beautifully crafted and charged with emotion, Walden’s work is celebrated for its intimate and authentic portrayal of adolescence that often explores queer themes. Entertainment Weekly named her as one of “the most essential graphic novelists of her generation.”

It’s LIT PBS talks Graphic Novels

A recent It’s LIT PBS episode discussed how graphic novels are in fact . . . novels. In the myriad examples of the fantastic literature available in graphic form, the video features grad and faculty Tillie Walden ’16 and Vermont Cartoonist Laureate with Spinning and advisor Alison Bechdel with Fun Home. It’s LIT is a video essay series hosted by Lindsay Ellis and Princess Weekes where they explore figures, genres, and books that shaped the literary world.

Every year, SPX commissions a top cartoonist to draw their poster. And this year Tillie Walden ′16 has provided her usual luscious work. Tillie is best known for her Eisner-award winning memoir Spinning, about coming of age in an all-girl high school while on the figure skating team. Her most recent book, On a Sun Beam, originally published as a webcomic, was released through First Second. Her next comic, Are You Listening, is coming this fall, also from First Second.

Summer Workshop Spotlight: Young Adult Comics with Jo Knowles and Tillie Walden

Crafting authentic, relatable teen characters and narratives

Winter time often brings people to reflect back on their youth, such as the books they used to read. If these musing have inspired you to create stories for the next generation of young adults, it is a good time to sign up for Creating Graphic Novels for the Young Adult Market. For five days from August 5–9, you can learn from with Jo Knowles (Still a Work In Progress, Read Between the Lines) and Tillie Walden ′16 (Spinning, On a Sunbeam) about crafting authentic, relatable teen characters and narratives. Through lectures and exercises, you will examine the idiosyncrasies of the young adult genre.

CCS at the Boston Book Festival

The Boston Book Festival is a free festival promoting the culture of reading. They also hold year-round events, but the festival is the annual culmination of their work. Tillie Walden ’16 will also be here with her award-winning memoir Spinning (First Second, 2017) and her newest book, On a Sunbeam.

With the release of the Berlin: City of Light (Drawn and Quarterly), Jason Lutes is out and about this fall. On October 13, Jason will be at the Boston Book Festival. Then he scoots north to appear at the Vermont Book Shop on October 17. Jason’s trilogy Berlin, now compiled in a single volume, is a historical fiction graphic novel about the decline of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Nazism in Germany.

3 CCS Top ALA YA Graphic Novel List!

The American Association of Librarians has posted a list of the 2018 top ten graphic novels for youth in Booklist Online. Three from The Center for Cartoon Studies made the list!

As The Crow Flies

Melanie Gillman ′13 already won the Stonewall Award from ALA for As the Crow Flies Vol. 1 (Iron Circus Comics), so it comes as no surprise that this comic is also in the top ten YA graphic novels. From the ALA post:

Lush, warm colored-pencil artwork relates the story of 13-year-old Charlie, a queer black girl who struggles with her faith—as well as outdated concepts and whitewashed history—on an all-girls hiking trip.
