New comic teaching teens about sustainability by Angela Boyle ’16

Angela Boyle ’16 wrote Maker Comics: Live Sustainably, a graphic novel with art by Les McClaine for First Second’s Maker Comics series. Coming in April 2022, eight projects get teens and tweens started down the path of living green. You’ll watch as Isaac learns about sustainability from Aurora at his local community garden. Not only will you learn about what sustainability is and why it’s important, but you will also get step-by-step instructions for projects to help you get started living a greener life: beeswax food wrappers, a bee garden, a worm farm, a cute to-go cutlery pack, and so much more.

Everyone is on the hunt for new ways to entertain their kids (and themselves) now that more places have stay-at-home orders. It’s a great time to work on comics! You can process the real world and explore your emotions in this situation, or you can escape the current difficulties by exploring and creating fictional worlds. A new step by step comic to teach kids how to Grow a Garden by CCS alumni Alexis Frederick-Frost

Alexis Frederick-Frost ’07 created a graphic novel for First Second’s Maker Comics series with six gardening projects. Maker Comics: Grow a Garden is out now! You’ll follow along with Will, Violet, and Basil at the Garden Gnome Academy. Will and his friends learn about soil and compost. To follow along, you don’t need a big backyard—just a little bit of space and a lot of sunlight.

J. P. Coovert ′08 has a new comic coming in October 2019 from First Second: Maker Comics: Draw a Comic! As part of the new Maker Comics series from First Second, this graphic novel includes seven comic projects. To keep the stakes high, the graphic novel is centered on Maggie, who needs to come up with $500,000 in a week to save the International Comics Library from being bulldozed by Dr. Carl. As her new assistant, you’ll help Maggie as she uses all her comic drawing skills. You’ll learn to create and print your own comics books, following simple steps to sketch out your story ideas, ink a comic page, and publish a finished minicomic.
