A new step by step comic to teach kids how to Grow a Garden by CCS alumni Alexis Frederick-Frost

February 29, 2020

Alexis Frederick-Frost ’07 created a graphic novel for First Second’s Maker Comics series with six gardening projects. Maker Comics: Grow a Garden is out now! You’ll follow along with Will, Violet, and Basil at the Garden Gnome Academy. Will and his friends learn about soil and compost. To follow along, you don’t need a big backyard—just a little bit of space and a lot of sunlight.

With the easy instructions inside this book, you can grow lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, and more. Maker Comics: Grow a Garden! will walk you through each step to make: a compost bin, seed pots, potting mix, a grow-light shelf, a cold frame, and a container garden.

Alexis Frederick-Frost is co-author and illustrator of the critically acclaimed Adventures in Cartooning series of graphic novels and picture books with Andrew Arnold ’07 and CCS director James Sturm. A combination how-to book and exciting adventure story, Adventures in Cartooning: how to turn your doodles into comics, was one of Booklist’s Top Ten Graphic Novel of 2010 and has encouraged hundreds of young artists to create their own comics. He also wrote and illustrated the monthly comic Kit and Clay for The Phoenix Magazine in the United Kingdom.
