Summer Workshop Spotlight: Young Adult Comics with Jo Knowles and Tillie Walden

Crafting authentic, relatable teen characters and narratives

Winter time often brings people to reflect back on their youth, such as the books they used to read. If these musing have inspired you to create stories for the next generation of young adults, it is a good time to sign up for Creating Graphic Novels for the Young Adult Market. For five days from August 5–9, you can learn from with Jo Knowles (Still a Work In Progress, Read Between the Lines) and Tillie Walden ′16 (SpinningOn a Sunbeam) about crafting authentic, relatable teen characters and narratives. Through lectures and exercises, you will examine the idiosyncrasies of the young adult genre.

Jo Knowles is the author of Still a Work in Progress (Candlewick, 2016), Read Between the Lines (Candlewick, 2016), Living with Jackie Chan (Candlewick, 2015), See You at Harry’s (Candlewick, 2013), Pearl (Henry Holt, 2011), Jumping Off Swings (Candlewick, 2011), and Lessons from a Dead Girl (Candlewick, 2009). Jo’s awards include two SCBWI Crystal Kite Awards, a New York Times Editor’s Choice and Notable Book, the PEN New England Susan P. Bloom Children’s Book Discovery Award, American Library Association Notables, Bank Street College’s Best Books for Children (Outstanding Merit), and YALSA’s Best Fiction for Young Adults. Jo’s books have also appeared on numerous state award lists. Jo has a master’s degree in children’s literature and teaches writing at the Mountain View MFA program through Southern New Hampshire University.
