Tillie Walden ’16, graduate and faculty at The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS), is on the Forbes 30 Under 30 2024 list. “…Vermont appointed Tillie Walden the cartoon laureate, and at 26, she’s the youngest artist to receive the honor. Walden, who has published more than 10 books, often centering queer narratives, is also one of the youngest recipients of an Eisner Award, often referred to as the Oscars of the comics industry.” –Forbes. White River Junction, Vermont –The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) has selected Arwen Donahue as its sixth annual Cornish-CCS Residency Fellowship for Fall 2023. Arwen will be working on a graphic memoir that explores generational legacies of sexual violence and asks how writing and art can play a role in their transformation.

MONTPELIER, VT—Norwich resident Tillie Walden will be appointed Vermont’s fifth Cartoonist Laureate on Thursday, April 13, 2023, when she will be recognized on the Vermont Statehouse floor.
Walden is one of the most celebrated and accomplished cartoonists working today. She won the 2018 Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work for her graphic novel memoir “Spinning,” making her at 22 one of the youngest Eisner Award winners ever.
Beautifully crafted and charged with emotion, Walden’s work is celebrated for its intimate and authentic portrayal of adolescence that often explores queer themes. Entertainment Weekly named her as one of “the most essential graphic novelists of her generation.”

The first ever Non-Fiction Comics Festival will feature panel discussions, workshops, and exhibiting cartoonists creating non-fiction and autobiographical work.

From science to politics, history to health care, cartooning has exploded as a legitimate medium for exploring non-fiction topics and the textures of lived experience. With roots in the Vermont Folklife Center’s Non-Fiction Comics Mini-Fest (2017, 2018 & 2019) and their partnership with the University of Vermont, the Pulp Culture Comic Arts Festival and Symposium (2017 & 2018), NCFS celebrates the full scope of non-fiction cartooning with the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington, Vermont.

The Center for Cartoon Studies is looking forward to seeing students on campus and online this fall as it embraces a blended learning model. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: On Thursday, April 2, 2020, West Townshend, Vermont resident Rick Veitch will be appointed Vermont’s fourth cartoonist laureate during a live stream event. Veitch was to be recognized on the Vermont Statehouse floor and meet with Vermont Governor Phil Scott on April 2, but that will be rescheduled due to the pandemic. Vermont is the only state that regularly appoints a cartoonist laureate.

Slideshow Comics is a free event happening on Saturday November 23 at 8pm at Main Street Museum, just a few blocks from The Center for Cartoon Studies. Inspired by R. Sikoryak’s carousel comics, cartoonists from CCS will be reading their own comics aloud to slideshows and a variety of other acts!

Rachel Lindsay is the author of RX: A Graphic Memoir (Grand Central Publishing, 2018), about her experience working in psychopharmaceutical advertising and subsequent hospitalization for bipolar mania. Her comic strip, Rachel Lives Here Now, appears weekly in Vermont’s alternative newspaper Seven Days and has gained acclaim for its humorous take on Vermont-centric themes. Rachel has appeared on Vermont Public Radio’s Vermont Edition and Weekly Conversation on the Arts, as well as in Eva Sollberger’s web video series Stuck in Vermont, and was named “a cartoonist to watch” by the Comics Reporter in 2017.
