Vermont Event: Slide Show Comics

Slideshow Comics is a free event happening on Saturday November 23 at 8pm at Main Street Museum, just a few blocks from The Center for Cartoon Studies. Inspired by R. Sikoryak’s carousel comics, cartoonists from CCS will be reading their own comics aloud to slideshows and a variety of other acts!

MK Czerwiec, RN, MA, is the creator of Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371 (Penn State University Press, 2017), a co-author of the Graphic Medicine Manifesto (Penn State University Press, 2015), and editor of Menopause: A Comic Treatment. Robyn Smith ′17 will be talking at the Fleming Museum of Art, the University of Vermont, on October 5 at noon with cartoonist Whit Taylor. Robyn wrote The Saddest, Angriest Black Girl in Town to explore the intersections of Blackness and mental health. She and Whit Taylor—author of Ghost Stories (Rosarium Publishing, 2018), The Anthropologists, and many other comics—will discuss mentorship and networks among female cartoonists of color.

Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371 by MK Czerwiec

MK Czerwiec, 2019 CCS Applied Cartooning Fellow, will be talking about Graphic Medicine at ArtisTree on Saturday, October 12, at 3pm. In this interactive workshop, participants will be introduced to the field of graphic medicine, which integrates the medium of comics with topics of health, illness, caregiving, and disability. MK will lead several exercises exploring the many ways drawing and comics can enhance our processing of health-related experiences. This workshop will appeal to health care workers, authors, artists, academics, and fans of comics and medicine alike. Absolutely no prior experience with comics or drawing required! Preregistration is requested but not necessary.

Alum Em Sauter at Brooklyn Brewery for “Beer is for Everyone!”

Beer is for Everyone is out. And if you are in Brooklyn, you can get it signed by the creator, Em Sauter, at Brooklyn Brewery, Friday, December 8, from 7–9. The event is during tasting room hours, so you can sample beer while talking about beer while getting a book about beer signed by a beer-themed cartoonist.

Vermont Non-Fiction Comics Mini-Fest

Non-fiction comics are a vibrant genre. Autobiographical comics have been popular for a while, but as we can see with the popularity of The Nib, journalism comics are a hit. But that is not the end of it. There are comics about science, biographies, and more. So the Vermont Folklife Center is hosting the Non-Fiction Comics Mini-Fest on April 23 in Middlebury, Vermont.
