CCS Community Members Nominated for 2025 Ignatz Awards 

The nominees are in for the esteemed Ignatz Awards presented at the annual Small Press Expo, and The Center for Cartoon Studies is happy to announce that several members of our community have been nominated.

The nominees are….

Self-published RUST BELT REVIEW, VOL. 6, by Sean Knickerbocker ‘12 is nominated for Outstanding Anthology. A serialized literary comics anthology, this volume of RUST BELT REVIEW includes works by independent comic and zine artists Andrew Greenstone, Alex Nall, Ana Pando, Ivy Lynn Allie ‘21, and Knickerbocker.

CCS Alum Nominated for 2024 Ignatz Awards

The nominees are in for the prestigious Ignatz Awards presented at the annual Small Press Expo, and what a roster it is! 

The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) is happy to announce several members of the community have been nominated. They include alumni, fellows, visiting artists, and studio prize winners such as Robyn Smith ‘16, Daryl Seitchik ‘17, Ana Two ‘24, and Julie Delporte.

Robyn Smith ’16 is nominated for Outstanding Artist for NIGHT FEVER from Gladiolus Magazine #1 published by Black Josei Press. The comic was inspired by Robyn’s first Hampshire College Halloween. Robyn won an Outstanding Story Ignatz Award last year for WASH DAY DIARIES, also published by Black Josei Press.

Kori Michele Handwerker ’19 to debut Tiny Book Science at SPX

TINY BOOK SCIENCE by faculty and alum Kori Michele Handwerker ’19 will debut at this year’s Small Press Expo (SPX) in Bethesda, MD, the premier event for graphic novels, comics and cartooning. The self-published zine workbook was inspired by Kori’s years of making and teaching about zines. Kori’s passion for zines can be seen throughout the 60-page educational publication, which they designed and drew entirely. TINY BOOK SCIENCE features a library of handouts and lessons for zine-makers and other educators to teach about zines and how to make them. A digital copy is also available.

CCS schedule and exhibitors at Small Press Expo 2019

Here is a line up for CCS at SPX 2019!:

The Small Press Expo (SPX) is coming up on September 14 -15, and there are plenty of ways to see The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) grads while you are there! CCS will be present at table W28 with copies of This Is What Democracy Looks Like.

As part of the tour for This Is What Democracy Looks Like, Dan Nott ′18 (Table A7) will be on the Graphic Advocacy panel with Archie Bongiovanni (A Quick & Easy Guide To They/Them Pronouns), Box Brown (Cannabis), and Matt Bors (The Nib). Hallie Jay Pope will be the moderator. The group will discuss using comics as a powerful tool in sharing a particular mission and point of view.

CCS grads up for Small Press Expo Ignatz Awards!

In just a few weeks, Small Press Expo will be opening its doors for another year in Bethesda, Maryland. One of the largest small press comic shows in North America, it is also host to one the Ignatz Awards. Though the shortlists are juried, the final votes come from attendees at SPX. We wish the best of luck to Lucy Knisley ′09, Julie Delporte (Fellow), Eleri Harris ′14, and Alec Longstreth (Instructor)! Also, this year’s SPX illustration is by Tillie Walden ′16! SPX takes place on September 14-15.

Lucy Knisley ′09 is up for Outstanding Artist on Kid Gloves (First Second). This memoir explores Lucy’s troubles with getting and staying pregnant. Kid Gloves is also up for Book of the Year at the Harvey Awards.

Lucy Knisley ′09 Special Guest at Small Press Expo 2019

Lucy Knisley

Lucy Knisley ′09 is going to be a special guest at this year’s Small Press Expo (SPX) in Bethesda, Maryland, on September 14 and 15. Earlier this year, she released Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos (First Second), an exploration of her struggles and triumphs with pregnancy.

SPX is one of the largest celebrations of independent comics. Every year, they also host the Ignatz Awards, the festival prize, for graphic novels and minicomics.

Every year, SPX commissions a top cartoonist to draw their poster. And this year Tillie Walden ′16 has provided her usual luscious work. Tillie is best known for her Eisner-award winning memoir Spinning, about coming of age in an all-girl high school while on the figure skating team. Her most recent book, On a Sun Beam, originally published as a webcomic, was released through First Second. Her next comic, Are You Listening, is coming this fall, also from First Second.

CCS Special Guests at SPX

At SPX this year, faculty Jason Lutes (Berlin) and Max de Radigues (CCS fellow) (Weegee) are both special guests. Jason will be there with the final volume of his trilogy, Berlin. Max de Radigues has also released a new book in French, Stig & Tilde 1 : L’île Du Disparu (The Island of the Disappeared).

Jason will be part of the panel “The Epic, Serialized,” with Anders Nilsen (Big Questions, Tongues), Ngozi Ukazu (Check, Please), and Matthew Thurber (Art Comics). Moderator Isaac Cates (Cartozia Tales) will get them to discuss how long comics change over time, serialization, and how outside influences affect long projects.

Alum Debut: Killbuck by Sean Knickerbocker

Sean Knickerbocker’s (′12) debut graphic novel, Killbuck, is now out through One Percent Press, which is run by JP Coovert. This coming-of-age story is set in impoverished rural America. It is 96 black-and-white pages at 8.5×5.5 inches.

Visiting Artist: Sophia Foster-Dimino

Sophia Foster-Dimino is an Ignatz-winning cartoonist and illustrator living and working in San Francisco, CA. Foster-Dimino has produced illustrations for a variety of outlets and worked as a Google Doodler. She has self-published a number of zines and contributed to several anthologies. Her ongoing series, Sex Fantasy, has received critical acclaim, earning her Ignatz Awards for both Outstanding Series and Outstanding mini-comic, as well as a third for Promising New Talent. Koyama Press released a compilation of Sex Fantasy at the Small Press Expo 2017.
