We are excited to announce our participation in the Harvard Radcliffe Institute’s upcoming exhibit, Drawing Us Together: Public Life and Public Health in Contemporary Comics

“The global pandemic and recent movements for racial justice have tested public and private institutions in this country; our sense of collective wellbeing; and familial, social, and civic lives. Drawing Us Together: Public Life and Public Health in Contemporary Comics explores these challenges and the interconnectedness of contemporary public life and public health through the medium of comics. You can visit the exhibit between 9/19/22 – 12/17/22, at The Johnson-Kulukundis Family Gallery, open Monday–Saturday, noon–5 PM.

Whit Taylor Joins CCS Faculty this Spring

Whit Taylor (Ghost Stories) is joining the faculty at The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) this spring as the facilitator of Visiting Artist Seminar. The course features weekly guests including the most celebrated cartoonists, children’s books authors, designers, writers, and designers. Guests share their creative process and professional pathways. In addition to lecturing at CCS as a previous visiting artist, Whit was also the keynote speaker at the International Comics and Medicine Conference in 2019 (see photo above). A big thanks to R. Sikoryak who facilitated the most recent fall term of Visiting Artist Seminar. His Constitution Illustrated was a top ten The New York Times Best Graphic Novels of 2020.

Comics and Medicine conference: Ill-Conceived and Well-Drawn exhibit, curated by Ellen Forney on display at CCS and Dartmouth Library

The 9th annual Comics and Medicine conference will be exhibiting Ill-Conceived and Well-Drawn, curated by Ellen Forney. The conference runs August 16-18th. The exhibit will be on display at The Center for Cartoon Studies prior to the conference and at Dartmouth College Baker-Berry Library during the Comics and Medicine conference from August 8th-24th.

International Comics and Medicine Conference Comes to Vermont and New Hampshire

International Comics and Medicine Conference Comes to Vermont and New Hampshire

Academic conference to be hosted by The Center for Cartoon Studies with support by Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College

August 16-18, 2018

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION (VT), March 19, 2018– The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) is proud to announce the 9th International Comics and Medicine Conference to be held at The Center for Cartoon Studies campus and at nearby Dartmouth College. Previous conferences have been held in London, Chicago, Toronto, Brighton, Seattle, and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Graphic Medicine explores the intersections of comics and healthcare. This year’s theme, “The Ways We Work” invites participants to share and reflect upon how Graphic Medicine is being practiced in public healthcare centers, classrooms, home studios, private clinics, libraries, and bedsides. The conference begins with an evening event held Thursday, August 16, and then consists of two days of a mix of peer-reviewed academic papers, lectures, and workshops.

Graphic Medicine Conference

The Graphic Medicine Conference has been an annual gathering across North America and the United Kingdom since 2010. And in 2018, the venue is at The Center for Cartoon Studies!

London, 2010, was hosted at the School of Advanced Study, Institute of English Studies, University of London. The keynote speakers were Paul Gravett (editor of The Mammoth Book of Best Crime Comics, 2008), Brian Fies (Mom’s Cancer, 2006), and Marc Zaffran.
