Alumni Sophie Goldstein for Free Comic Book Day

Sophie Goldstein ’13 (House of Women, The Oven) is coming to you this Free Comic Book Day as one of Fantagraphics’s most popular authors. Sophie is one of twelve creators in the second World’s Greatest Cartoonists that Fantagraphics has put together. Each creator has contributed a new piece. This issue will feature a cover by Sophie herself.

House of Women (Fantagraphics, 2017) is Sophie’s second solo graphic novel, her first with Fantagraphics. The story follows Sarai and her fellow emissaries onto an unknown planet. They spend most of their time working to “civilize” the natives. Their only other human contact is a man with genetic modifications. They will find out if the most danger comes from the natives, the man, or themselves.

Free Comic Book Day is the first Saturday of May each year. This May 5, head to your comic book store early to get a copy of World’s Greatest Cartoonists.

Past Cartoonist Studio Prize winners of Best Print Comic

The Cartoonist Studio Prize is back for it’s sixth year. Two creators, one each for print and online, are selected each year and receive $1,000. Every year, the judges are Slate’s Jacob Brogan, a CCS representative (this year, Kevin Czap), and a guest judge (this year, Andrew Farago from San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum). Submissions are currently open an any English comic published in 2017 is eligible, so submit before the deadline, January 31, 2018.

Next Up Visiting Artist: Gregory Benton

Gregory Benton cut his teeth on the political anthology World War 3, moving on to writing and drawing stories for Nickelodeon, Vertigo, DC Comics, and many more. Gregory also produced numerous limited-edition mini-comics, some of which reside in The Library of Congress’ rare books collection. His book B+F was awarded the inaugural Award of Excellence at MoCCAFest 2013. An expanded version of B+F was published in the autumn of 2013 through Adhouse Books (USA) and was translated into French. The long form edition of B+F was selected for the Society of Illustrators first Comics and Cartoon Art Annual in 2014.
