Kazoo has released Noisemakers: 25 Women Who Raised Their Voices and Changed the World, an anthology of women throughout history, including stories by Lucy Knisley ′09 and Sophie Goldstein ′13. From the creators of the award-winning Kazoo magazine—the quarterly, indie print magazine for girls, ages 5 to 12—comes a look at the lives of 25 extraordinary women through the eyes of 25 extraordinary comic artists. In 25 distinct styles from some of the most exciting comic artists, Noisemakers is for everyone who is not afraid to use their voice and for those who could use a little boost.

Praise for Noisemakers:

  • “Each style is not only representative of the creators but also of the women whose stories are being told.”—Lily on The Pullbox
  • “Noisemakers is an ambitious and important book featuring diverse stories, stunning cartooning and a positive message that will resonate with young girls, their parents, teachers, aspiring cartoonists, librarians, and booksellers and book critics alike.”—Comic Watch
  • “Some of the most dynamic and acclaimed contemporary cartoonists (including Emil Ferris, Alitha E. Martinez, Rosemary Valero-O’Connel’, Lucy Knisley, and many more!) are the people making these stories happen, so feel to enjoy yourself no matter what age you may be.”—Chloe Maveal on Comics Beat

Sophie Goldstein ′13 (House of Women, Fantagraphics, 2017) shows us Mother Jones, a prominent union organizer, community organizer, and activist who co-founded the Industrial Workers of the World. Her next graphic novel, An Embarrassment of Witches, is coming from Top Shelf Productions later this year, and is currently being serialized on her Patreon. The Oven (AdHouse Books, 2015) won two Ignatz awards and was nominated for Slate Magazine’s Cartoonist Studio Prize.

Lucy Knisley ′09 (Kid Gloves, First Second, 2019) tells the tale of Julia Child, a chef who wasn’t afraid to make mistakes. Her second book, Relish (First Second, 2013), was a Publishers Weekly Best Children’s Book of 2013 and an NPR Best Book of 2013, and won the American Library Association Alex Award. It was also featured as a New York Times best-seller and Goodreads top book of the year.
