Luke Healy’s ′14 Americana Guardian’s Book of Year

Americana by Luke Healy ′14 is in The Guardian’s list of Best Comics of 2019. The list includes comic greats like Chris Ware’s Rusty Brown (Pantheon), an epic tale about a single day at a Nebraska school in the mid-1970s; and Jaime Hernandez’s Is This How You See Me? (Fantagraphics), focusing on how the time has molded Maggie and Hopey into complex, middle-aged women from young LA punks.

Past Cartoonist Studio Prize winners of Best Print Comic

The Cartoonist Studio Prize is back for it’s sixth year. Two creators, one each for print and online, are selected each year and receive $1,000. Every year, the judges are Slate’s Jacob Brogan, a CCS representative (this year, Kevin Czap), and a guest judge (this year, Andrew Farago from San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum). Submissions are currently open an any English comic published in 2017 is eligible, so submit before the deadline, January 31, 2018.

Visiting Artist: Hillary Chute

Hillary Chute’s book Why Comics? From Underground to Everywhere will be out from HarperCollins in December 2017. She has taught at the University of Chicago and Harvard University and is professor of English and Art + Design at Northeastern University. She is also the author of Disaster Drawn: Visual Witness, Comics, and Documentary Form (Belknap, 2016), Outside the Box: Interviews with Contemporary Cartoonists (University of Chicago Press, 2014), and Graphic Women: Life Narrative and Contemporary Comics (Columbia University Press, 2010), as well as associate editor of Art Spiegelman’s MetaMaus (Pantheon). She has collaborated with cartoonists such as Spiegelman and Alison Bechdel, and has written for publications including Artforum, Bookforum, The New York Review of Books, and Poetry.

The Winners of the Cartoonist Studio Prize

The Slate Book Review and The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) are proud to announce the winners of the third annual Cartoonist Studio Prize. The winners were selected by Slate Book Review editor Dan Kois; the faculty and students at The Center for Cartoon Studies, represented by CCS fellow Sophie Yanow; and this year’s guest judge, cartoonist Paul Karasik.

The winner of the Best Print Comic prize is Richard McGuire for Here, a decades-in-the-making, centuries-spanning epic of time and space, as seen through the complete history of a single room in a single house. Published by Pantheon.

The winner of the Best Web Comic prize is Winston Rowntree for Watching, a beautiful, detailed story of time travelers observing life in the present day.
