Summer 2020 Workshop Line Up

Summer is a great time for cartooning adventures! Brush up on some skills, learn new ones, or discover the world of cartooning for the first time ever.  Summer workshops are led by award-winning artists.  This year we’re excited to welcome new instructors and workshops, in addition to our established summer favorites: Create Comics, Cartooning Studio, and Graphic Novel Workshop. Summer Workshop: Cartooning Studio

Work on your comics at the Cartooning Studio! This summer, from June 17–21, you can hone your comic skills with Jon Chad (Leo Geo, Science Comics: Volcanoes) and Beth Hetlandm ′11 (Half Asleep).

For 5 days, you will learn through lectures and drawing exercises to develop your characters and environments, strengthen your writing, and practice a variety of inking techniques. And by the end, you and your classmates will get to share your brand-new mini comics with each other.  “You will learn the things you didn’t know you didn’t know!” says previous workshop participant Carolyn from Ann Arbor, MI.

Summer Workshop Spotlight: Graphic Novel Workshop with Paul Karasik

Ho to Read Nancy

Summer 2019 you can work with Paul Karasik (How To Read Nancy, City of Glass) to get your own graphic novel off the ground! You’ll have a week, from July 29 to August 2 or August 5 to 9, to produce the first draft of a longer comics project. The course makes use of lecture, collaborative exercises, book discussions and more. And if that week isn’t enough for you, you can sign up for the optional online extension from August 13 to October 4!

“How To Read Nancy” , by Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden, is the deconstruction of a single Nancy comic strip to reveal the hidden language of comics.“How To Read Nancy”  received an Eisner Award 2018: Best Comics-Related Book of the Year!

Summer Workshop Spotlight: Single-Panel Comics with Hilary Price

June 3-6, 2019

Hilary Price (Rhymes with Orange) is back from summer 2019 with her Single-Panel Comics Workshop, June 3-6. This 4 day workshop is jam-packed for four days. Hilary examines the essentials in creating a single panel comic: characters, environment, plot, and THE GAG.

Stephen Donch took the Single-Panel Workshop in 2017. And as most cartoonists say after first visiting The Center for Cartoon Studies, “for the first time in my life I was surrounded by people who shared my crazy love for comics.” You can read more of his interview with Angela Boyle ′16.

Summer Workshop Spotlight: Young Adult Comics with Jo Knowles and Tillie Walden

Crafting authentic, relatable teen characters and narratives

Winter time often brings people to reflect back on their youth, such as the books they used to read. If these musing have inspired you to create stories for the next generation of young adults, it is a good time to sign up for Creating Graphic Novels for the Young Adult Market. For five days from August 5–9, you can learn from with Jo Knowles (Still a Work In Progress, Read Between the Lines) and Tillie Walden ′16 (SpinningOn a Sunbeam) about crafting authentic, relatable teen characters and narratives. Through lectures and exercises, you will examine the idiosyncrasies of the young adult genre.

Summer Workshop Spotlight: Create Comics

Get started making comics with Luke Howard (Our Mother) and Jon Chad (Leo Geo and Science Comics: Volcanoes), both are instructors at The Center for Cartoon Studies.  This summer from July 15–19, you can work with other new comic creators to produce an anthology in 5 days.

Summer Workshop Spotlight: Cartoon Club

July 15–19

With so much free time to look forward to this summer, it might be time to plan for where the kids are going to be. This summer, there are two week-long comic workshops for kids aged 9+. From July 8–12 or July 15–19 (or both!), kids can spend 3 hours a day working on their comics with other kids their age. Run by current and former CCS alum, they will get to learn from experienced cartoonists and share with their peers.

Student Spotlight: Coco Fox ′19

Coco Fox ′19 is about to start her second year at The Center for Cartoon Studies. Born in Indiana, she worked as a graphic designer for four years in North Carolina, then in film industry in LA. As she said, “The Location, Location, Location comic by Alec Longstreth definitely made me want to check out this tiny, weird town.”
