Summer Workshop Spotlight: Graphic Novel Workshop with Paul Karasik

Ho to Read Nancy

Summer 2019 you can work with Paul Karasik (How To Read Nancy, City of Glass) to get your own graphic novel off the ground! You’ll have a week, from July 29 to August 2 or August 5 to 9, to produce the first draft of a longer comics project. The course makes use of lecture, collaborative exercises, book discussions and more. And if that week isn’t enough for you, you can sign up for the optional online extension from August 13 to October 4!

“How To Read Nancy” , by Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden, is the deconstruction of a single Nancy comic strip to reveal the hidden language of comics.“How To Read Nancy”  received an Eisner Award 2018: Best Comics-Related Book of the Year!

11th Commencement Ceremony with Speaker Paul Karasik

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VERMONT: This year’s Center for Cartoon Studies Commencement speaker is the critically acclaimed cartoonist and educator Paul Karasik. In addition to being a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Karasik is the co-creator of the graphic novel adaptation of Paul Auster’s City of Glass (with David Mazzucchelli), named by The Comics Journal as one of the “Best Comics of the 20th Century.”

The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) Commencement Ceremony takes place on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Barrette Center for the Arts at Northern Stage.

Paul Karasik’s book, The Ride Together, a Memoir of Autism in the Family, (written with his sister, Judy) was chosen by the Autism Society of America as the “Best Literary Work of the Year.” He has edited two books collecting the complete works of cartoonist Fletcher Hanks. The first volume, I Shall Destroy All the Civilized Planets, received an Eisner Award in 2008.

Put everything else aside and only work on your comics for a week in White River Junction, Vermont. Workshop instructor Paul Karasik is a cartoonist (The New Yorker, City of Glass), a comics scholar (I Shall Destroy All The Civilized Planets, How To Read Nancy), and a renowned teacher who really knows how to take good cartoonists and make them better.
