Art Spiegelman Awarded the MacDowell Medal

Art Spiegelman is the first-ever cartoonist to receive the Edward MacDowell Medal. MacDowell is one of the nation’s leading contemporary arts organizations, and it has been awarding this medal annually since 1960 to artists who have made an outstanding contribution to American culture.

Mice from Maus by Art Spiegelman

Art Spiegelman is presenting at the Pulp Culture Comics Arts Festival & Symposium. He almost single-handedly brought comic books out of the toy closet and onto the literature shelves. In 1992, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his masterful Holocaust narrative Maus—which portrayed Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. Maus II continued the remarkable story of his parents’ survival of the Nazi regime and their lives later in America. His comics are best known for their shifting graphic styles, their formal complexity, and controversial content.

R. Sikoryak is best known for his collection Masterpiece Comics.  He was formerly an associate editor and contributor to RAW, the groundbreaking 1980s comic
anthology. He’s drawn for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Onion, Nickelodeon, The New Yorker, and other media titans.  Sikoryak is also known for his “Carousel” series of multimedia comics slideshows, featuring cartoonists like Lauren Weinstein, Michael Kupperman, Jason Little, and himself, which have been presented in various venues in the United States and Canada.

Kriota Willberg writes, draws, needlepoints, and performs about body-oriented sciences. She teaches anatomy, pathology, drawing, and massage in a variety of colleges and studios around the country. Her blog, The Cinematologist examines medical themes through the lens of Hollywood films. Willberg/Dura Mater dance and film projects include the feature film, The Bentfootes and the short Sunscreen Serenade. Kriota has studied stage combat and worked as a researcher for a Hollywood screenwriter.

SPX 2014 Special Alt-Weekly Comic Guests: Lynda Barry, Jules Feiffer, and James Sturm

SPX  will salute pioneers and early popularizers of the alt-weekly comic by bringing in such major guests as “alt-comics godfather” Jules Feiffer, the Pulitzer-winning Village Voice legend and author/screenwriter/playwright; Lynda Barry, the great “Ernie Pook’s Comeek”/Chicago Reader cartoonist turned inspiring college educator; and The Center for Cartoon Studies co-founder James Sturm (“Market Day,” RAW), who co-founded Seattle’s The Stranger.

Sikoryak relocated to White River Junction for the 2011-12 academic year to teach at The Center for Cartoon Studies.

Françoise Mouly joined The New Yorker as art editor in 1993. She has been the publisher and editorial director of TOON Books since its launch in 2008. Mouly founded Raw Books & Graphics in 1977 and was publisher for 15 years. Starting in 1980, Mouly was the founder, publisher and designer of the pioneering avant-garde comics anthology RAW, which she co-edited along with her husband, cartoonist Art Spiegelman. RAW first brought acclaim to artists such as Charles Burns, Sue Coe, Gary Panter, Chris Ware, Lorenzo Mattotti, Joost Swarte, Xavier Mariscal, and many others. It is also the magazine where Maus, Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comic book on the Holocaust, was first published.
