The word “comic” has always been a bit of a misnomer and The Cartoon Crier hopes to set the record straight. Sorrow and woe is the focus of this free 36-page newspaper tabloid that highlights the work of The National Cartoonists Society members and of The Center for Cartoon Studies’ community.

The Cartoon Crier features the saddest strips from iconic comics like Family Circus, Beetle Bailey, Dennis the Menace, B.C., and For Better and For WorseThe Cartoon Crier also includes comics by Ivan Brunetti, Mell Lazarus, Melissa Mendes, Joe Lambert, Tom Gammill, Hilary Price, Laura Park, Richard Thompson, and Mo Willems, as well as new work from the paper’s editors, Cole Closser, R. Sikoryak, and James Sturm.

CCS Fall Visiting Artist Line Up

The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) Fall Visiting Artist lineup is here!  Cartoonists and artists due to visit the school this semester include Warren Bernard, Harry Bliss, Farel Dalrymple, Tom Gammill, Kevin Huizenga, Peter Kuper, Mell Lazarus, Tara McGowan, Ilan Manouach, John Porcellino, Karl Stevens, and Dana Walrath.

Kicking off the fall Visiting Artist session:

Farel Dalrymple is an American artist and alternative comics creator. He is best known for his award-winning comics series Pop Gun War. Pop Gun War was a Xeric Grant recipient and won a gold medal from The Society of Illustrators. He is currently working on a Pop Gun War  follow up (Pop Gun War : Chain Letter), drawing his Eisner nominated web comic, It Will All Hurt for studygroupcomics, and illustrating The Earfarmer, a science fiction love story for Dark Horse Presents with writer Chris Stevens. Farel Dalrymple‘s brand new book is an original 304-page water-colored comic book/graphic novel, The Wrenchies, from First Second Books.

The Cartoon Crier: Read It and Weep

LEARN TO DRAW with Tom Gammill at CCS

Tom Gammill is a TV writer whose credits include “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Night with David Letterman,” “Seinfeld,” and “Monk.” He has been a Consulting Producer at “The Simpsons” since 1998. His syndicated comic strip “The Doozies” riffs on the clichés associated with comics and humor, and his related series of “Learn to Draw” videos finds him in the role of an inept but cheerful cartoonist/instructor.
