A Thousand Times by Kevin Reilly ′18 (Secret Acres) was selected as a Best American Comics notable. As Rob Clough describes it on High-Low: “It’s the story of a horse that keeps running and running, trying to find its girdle. It’s another example of Reilly creating a world with its own dream logic that inexorably leads to a horrific end.”

Best American Comics Notable: Montebank by D.W. ′12

Montebank by D.W. ′12 (Fantagraphics) was included in Best American Comics notables. Mountebank is a systematized sketchbook that tracks the inner workings of an obsessive brain, a book that could only be described as “psychedoolic.” Both meditative and hypnotic, D.W. invites you to get lost alongside anthropomorphic creatures crawling through grid paper labyrinths and in his own brand of whirling dervish mark-making.

Stephen R. Bissette, beloved CCS faculty, has recently released a new book, Midnight Movie Monograph on The Brood, where he dives into Cronenberg’s movie The Brood. Similar to Bissette’s previous work, Teen Angels and New Mutants, which deconstructs Rick Veitch‘s graphic novel Brat Pack, Bissette takes a forensic and holistic approach to examining the many facets of this dark jewel of horror that he calls Cronenberg’s first masterpiece.

The Center for Cartoon Studies presents Charlotte Brontë Before Jane Eyre by CCS faculty Glynnis Fawkes came out from Hyperion Books on September 24. Jane Eyre was born out of a magnificent, vivid imagination, a deep cultivation of skill, and immense personal hardship and tragedy. Charlotte cast an empathetic lens on characters often ignored by popular literature of the time, questioning societal assumptions with a sharp intellect and changing forever the landscape of western literature.
