Curriculum Spotlight: Industry Day

Our favorite time of year is coming upon us again: Industry Day at CCS. Each year, a group of comic industry professionals gathers on a panel to discuss the ins and outs of working in the field. The group includes a wide variety of skills and experiences. Students gets a one-on-one consultation with these founts of knowledge, an invaluable experience. Industry Day is in addition to our weekly Visiting Artist Seminar and the Professional Practices course.

Next Up: Industry Day

In addition to our weekly Visiting Artist Seminar, a special Industry Day event is scheduled every spring. Professionals from the comics industry descend on White River Junction and The Center for Cartoon Studies. The entire day is set aside for the event with guests take part in a panel where the state of the comics industry and publishing are discussed at length. This year’s guests include comics critic Rob Clough, Andrea Colvin (Lion Forge), Patrick Crotty (Peow Studio), Tracy Hurren (Drawn and Quarterly), and Kelly Sonnack (Andrea Brown Literary Agency).

This Industry Day, The Center for Cartoon Studies was treated to a wide range of industry veterans from agents and editors to publishers. From the big comics publishers, we had our own Robyn Chapman, currently an editor at First Second. Representing the publishing industry news reporters, Calvin Reid is the senior news editor at Publisher’s Weekly, a weekly news magazine about the international book publishing business. Representing the big publishers, Sheila Keenan is a nonfiction editor at Penguin Random House. A comics agent, Tanya McKinnon came from McKinnon McIntyre. And from the independent comics publishers, we had Kevin Czap from Czap Books.

Spotlight: Robyn Chapman

Robyn Chapman has a long history with CCS, from our founding days! She is currently an editor at First Second, but she also makes her own mini comics when she has time and runs The Tiny Report, a chronicle of the comics micro-press movement to help bring awareness to the books this movement gets published.

CCS Industry Day

Industry Day gives both the students a chance to have their portfolios looked at by the best in the business (maybe arrange an internship) while the publishers get a chance to see the future of the comics industry and know what talent to look out for. This year guests include CCS alum Jen Vaughn (Fantagraphics, ComicsCurator), Allison Baker (Monkey Brain Comics), Tom Kaczynksi (Uncivilized books), Chris Pitzer (AdHouse), Bill Kartalopoulos (Best American Comics).

CCS Industry Day

Industry Day is an annual event that introduces CCS students to top industry professionals including publishers, editors, designers and critics.  Students attend a panel discussion followed by one-on-one reviews with the pros. This year’s line up includes: Andrew Arnold is a book designer for the children’s book company Roaring Brook Press. Holly Bemiss is an agent at the Susan Rabiner Literary Agency. Peggy Burns is the Associate Publisher of the world renowned, Montreal-based graphic novel and comics arts company Drawn & QuarterlyDan Kois is the senior editor at the Slate Book Review. Tucker Stone is a comic critic and blogger, most notably for The Comics Journal and the US Sales and Marketing Director for Nobrow.
