CCS Alum in Best American Comics 2018

The list for Best American Comics 2018 is out, and CCS alum are well represented in the Notable Comics. Though the Notable Comics are not included as excerpts in the book, they are listed in a section from the series editor, Bill Kartalopoulos, to showcase the variety and quality of the comics field for the time period. This edition’s guest editor is Phoebe Gloeckner, creator of The Diary of a Teenage Girl (North Atlantic Books, 2015).

The Center for Cartoon Studies Alum in the Lambda Awards

The Lambda Literary award finalists have been announced and two CCS books are up for the graphic novel prize: Spinning by Tillie Walden ′16 and Fetch: How a Bad Dog Brought Me Home by Nicole Georges (′13/14 CCS fellow). Lambda Literary is the United State’s oldest and largest literary arts organization devoted to advancing LGBTQ literature. And this is their 30th annual award! Both Tillie’s and Nicole’s books are autobiography that include the discovery and self-acceptance of their sexuality. The award June 4, 2018, in New York.

Nicole J. Georges is an award-winning graphic novelist, professor, and podcaster. She is the author of Fetch: How a Bad Dog Brought Me Home (Mariner Books, 2017), Calling Dr. Laura (Mariner Books, 2013), and Invincible Summer. Nicole was The Center for Cartoon Studies 2013/14 Fellow.

“Fetch” by Nicole Georges

Nicole Georges (The Center for Cartoon Studies fellow ’12-13) was always talked about her pets in her comics. And she obviously bonds with and loves them. In her second graphic novel, Fetch: How a Bad Dog Brought Me Home (Mariner Books), she discusses her dog Beija, a shar-pei/corgi mix, who has appeared in many of her comics over the years. Her first graphic novel was Calling Dr. Laura.
