Cartoon Studies spurs a creative community in the Upper Valley

Arts find home in
White River  Junction

Modi Kwanza

About this project: The idea of presenting the story of White River Junction’s artistic renaissance in illustrated form was influenced by the major presence in town of The Center for Cartoon Studies, a school that opened on South Main Street in 2005. Burlington Free Press staff writer Brent Hallenbeck recently spent two days in White River Junction talking with the creators of the community’s creative scene and taking numerous photographs of their work. He brought his words and pictures to Free Press copy editor/page designer Modisane Kwanza, an alumnus of The Center for Cartoon Studies, who based his illustrations on those photos. Cartoonists Drawn to Vermont

December 31, 2009

TONIC

The economy of White River Junction, an aging railroad town in Vermont, has been revitalized by an unlikely source: cartoonists.

The Center for Cartoon Studies, one of the few cartooning schools in the country, attracts a million dollars a year into the local economy, according to the school’s president. That’s not bad for something that was just a dream a few years ago.
