Mannie Murphy’08 on New York Times Best of 2021 Graphic Novels

I Never Promised You A Rose Garden by Mannie Murphy ’08 is on the New York Times list of Best Graphic Novels of 2021. The story starts with the life and death of River Pheonix before tackling the history of white supremacy in Portland, Oregon. To see the zines making up the original publication before Fantagraphics collected it, check out this CCS Instagram post. The storytelling technique itself is a fascinating study. Before the book was released, Mannie gave an interview with Angela Boyle ’16 about their process in making this story.

The Center for Cartoon Studies alum Luke Healy ‘s 14 HOW TO SURVIVE IN THE NORTH makes Publishers Weekly  Best Graphic Novels 2016  top 5 list!  PW’s list includes CCS recent commencement speaker Nate Powell’s, March: Book Three by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate. Also on the list is The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye (Sonny Liew), The One Hundred Nights of Hero: A Graphic Novel  (Isabel Greenberg), and Rosalie Lightning (Tom Hart).
