The Cartoonist Studio Prize is back for it’s sixth year. Two creators, one each for print and online, are selected each year and receive $1,000. Every year, the judges are Slate’s Jacob Brogan, a CCS representative (this year, Kevin Czap), and a guest judge (this year, Andrew Farago from San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum). Submissions are currently open an any English comic published in 2017 is eligible, so submit before the deadline, January 31, 2018.

Previous years have included an impressive breadth of web comics. Here are the past winners of Best Web Comic and some of the stiff competition.

And the 2017 Best Web Comic went to Christina Tran for “On Beauty,” a story about medical tourism in South Korea. She had strong competition including Greek Diary by Glynnis Fawkes, On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden ′16, and Wonderlust by Diana Nock.

2016 Best Web Comic went to Boulet for “I Want to Believe,” his third nomination. He was up against the likes of The Creepy Casefiles of Margo Maloo by Drew Weing and The Perry Bible Fellowship by Nicholas Gurewitch.

2015 went to Winston Rowntree for Watching, a beautiful, detailed story of time travelers observing life in the present day. He was up against the likes of Bikram Addict by Eroyn Franklin (published in the Nib), The Hole the Fox Did Make by Emily Carroll, Hollow, Part I by Sam Alden, and Oh Joy Sex Toy! by Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan.

2014 Best Web Comic went to Emily Carroll for Out of Skin, a dark fairy tale about a woman living alone in the woods and the ghosts that haunt her. She had stiff competition with such comics as Bouletcorp by Boulet, Gunshow by KC Green, and Lucky by Gabrielle Bell.

And the 2013 Best Web Comic went to Noelle Stevenson for the show-stopping Nimona, a twice-weekly series about a medieval supervillain who takes on an irritating sidekick is funny and vibrant. It was a tough competition that included  Sarah and the Seed by Ryan Andrews, The Dailies by Dakota McFadzean ′12 , and xkcd by Randall Munroe.
