New Book: Flash Forward

The podcast Flash Forward (Abrams), where Rose Eveleth tackles speculative fact and fiction, is being laid to paper with the aid of a crew of artists, including The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) alum Sophie Goldstein ’13, Amelia Onorato ’12, and many CCS visiting artists including Matt Lubchanksy, Ben Passmore, John Jennings, Sophia Foster-Dimino, and Box Brown. The collection includes many more contributors including Ziyed Ayoub, Maki Naro, Julia Gfrörer, Chris Jones, Blue Delliquanti, Zach Weinersmith, and Kate Sheridan. The book will be available on April 20, 2021!

Each artist chose a subject close to their heart to illustrate. Sophie’s comic, “Popnonymous,” looks at whether pop icons will become avatars. Matt’s comic, “Never Lay Me Down to Sleep,” explores what will happen if we ever conquer the need to sleep. Each comic is followed by an essay by Eveleth reporting her research into the field.

Sophie’s first long-form comics endeavor, Darwin Carmichael Is Going to Hell, was co-written with Jenn Jordan. They self-published with funding from Kickstarter in 2013. Sophie’s graphic novels include An Embarrassment of Witches (Top Shelf Comix); House of Women (Fantagraphics), which collected the award-winning self-published mini-comic series; and The Oven (AdHouse Books), which won two Ignatz awards. Sophie has also illustrated a children’s book, Poopy Claws (Overdue Media, 2012), written by Gene Ambaum. Her comics and illustrations have appeared in various publications including New York Times MagazineBest American ComicsFable ComicsThe Pitchfork ReviewCicada Magazine and The Nib
