Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived & Well-Drawn!

The exhibit will be on display at The Center for Cartoon Studies Colodny Gallery prior to the conference and at Dartmouth College Baker Library during the conference.

The History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine is pleased to present our traveling banner exhibition Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived & Well-Drawn! Curated by cartoon artist Ellen Forney, the exhibition explores an increasingly popular, yet little-known literary field that uses comics to tell personal stories of illness and health. The language of words and pictures gives approachability and emotional impact to these personal stories, and even to the clinical data they sometimes include. “Graphic medicine is so effective for understanding clinical and emotional aspects of illness,” says Curator Ellen Forney.

The six-banner traveling exhibition Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived & Well-Drawn!, draws from seminal texts, newly procured by the US National Library of Medicine. The exhibition uses imagery and text from several of these personal stories told by the author as patient or caregiver. The NLM collects graphic medicine as an important facet of medical literature.

Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived & Well-Drawn! began traveling around the United States in January 2018.

The Firmament

Stories take center stage in Toyin Ojih Odutola’s drawings. She catches her characters at quiet moments captured from otherwise rich and complex lives. Short on specifics and long on allusion, the narratives she evokes suggest a wide emotional range. We are not meant to know exactly what takes place in these lives, but we are invited into their private spaces and we share an implied intimacy with many of them. Ojih Odutola allows us to peek, but not pry, into the lives of those who occupy her personal firmament. The artist establishes a compassionate confrontation between viewer and subject through the use of scale and through her extraordinary mark-making technique that draws us close to her surfaces. Many of the drawings are life-sized, some even full-length. This reinforces an uncanny sense that we share a space with her subjects; it also establishes an equivalence between viewer and subjec

The permanent collection at DHMC celebrates the diversity of art in the Upper Valley region and beyond.

Over one hundred reproductions from John J. Audubon’s Birds of America portfolio, donated by Laurance and Mary Rockefeller, are the foundation for a rich collection that reflects the beauty of DHMC’s natural setting. A generous gift from the DHMC Auxiliary in 1994 made it possible to expand the permanent collection and purchase a number of works for the Faulkner Building.

Highlights of the collection include two stained glass windows designed by noted artist Sabra Field, large oil paintings of the Connecticut River Valley by Eric Aho and Petria Mitchell, handmade paper installation pieces by Ellen Mears Kennedy, murals painted on site by muralist Sol Levenson, and a collaborative mural project with the AVA Gallery. Each piece provides an opportunity for contemplation and rejuvenation.
