White River Junction, Vermont — The Center for Cartoon Studies is pleased to announce the recent donation and exhibition of E. Howard Goodwin’s historic editorial cartoon collection, which boasts original art by Pulitzer Prize winners Herb Block, Rube Goldberg, Bruce Shanks, and Edmund Valtman, as well as many other famous editorial cartoonists.

E. Howard Goodwin (1919-2010) had a lifelong appreciation of the comics he read every morning in the newspaper. From 1946-1982, he worked at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and, whenever he saw an editorial cartoon related to the steel industry, he would write to the cartoonist or their newspaper requesting the original drawing. Surprisingly, many famous cartoonists sent him their drawings asking nothing in return.

The E. Howard Goodwin Editorial Cartoon Collection includes 19 original ink drawings and 3 reproductions from 20 different cartoonists, as well as original correspondence between Goodwin and the artists. This collection offers a unique glimpse into the history of the United States steel industry from 1949-1971, especially the relationship between Bethlehem Steel and the labor union.
