BIPOC and NEEDS-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS for SUMMER WORKSHOPS

BIPOC SCHOLARSHIPS

These merit-based scholarships are to support the professional development for BIPOC* cartoonists. CCS is offering one full scholarship for each of its summer cartooning workshops! For in-person workshops, scholarship recipients will also receive a $300 stipend to help offset travel expenses.

Our workshops are for both beginners and advanced artists and cover topics from tools and techniques to writing and drawing for both comics and graphic novels. To be considered for this scholarship, prospective workshop participants applied using the form that was previously linked below, which included a short written statement on how this workshop will aid their development as a visual storyteller, and one or two pieces of their work (sketches, self- or traditionally-published work, website, social media account, etc). A committee of CCS faculty and staff will review and make the selections.

The deadline to apply was March 21, 2024.

A selection will be made by April 4th, 2024, and those selected will be notified then. We will also send out a notice to applicants who were not selected.

If you are selected for the scholarship and have already registered for that workshop, we will refund you! One scholarship will be awarded per workshop. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions info@cartoonstudies.org

* BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. It is not a perfect term. If you are wondering if this term applies to you, reading about the history of the term, or listening to some of the debate surrounding the term may be helpful.

NEEDS-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS

Needs-based scholarships are available to help cover the cost of the workshop tuition through The Center for Cartoon Studies.

There are currently two needs-based scholarships:

One is a general scholarship (up to 40%), which is dependent on annual household income. This is on a first-come-first-served basis; funds are allocated per class.

Second is an Upper Valley–specific scholarship for those located in the vicinity of the school.

In either case, to apply you just need to email the amount of your adjusted gross income for the previous year (i.e the amount listed on your 2022 tax return for the 2023 winter workshops) to Dave Lloyd, lloyd@cartoonstudies.org. Copies or tax returns are not necessary.

Vermont Residents (18+)

Vermont residents who are 18 years old and up can apply for the Short-Term Training: Advancement Grant through the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation. This grant can cover the full cost of a CCS Summer or Winter Workshop.

CCS workshops do sell out. If you apply for a Advancement Grant, please forward your confirmation email from VSAC to registration@cartoonstudies.org CCS can then provide a discounted registration link where you can make a refundable $50 deposit to hold your spot for 14 days while your grant application is processed by VSAC.

CCS Students and Alumni Discounts

Discounts are available to The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) students and alumni.
