In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, Sasha Velour ’13 is releasing her history comic, Three Dollar Riot. Starting as her thesis right here at The Center for Cartoon Studies, the 36-page comic follows the events of the evening of June 27th, 1969, leading up to the riots. The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community against a police raid that began early the following morning at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village.  The comic is inspired by numerous first-person accounts and real-life legendary figures, including Sylvia Rivera, Tammy Novak, Stormé Delarverie, Ivan Valentin, and Marsha P. Johnson. Sasha did all the artwork, coloring, and lettering herself. And the updated version includes historical citations, recommended further readings, and a hand-drawn introduction, also by Sasha.
