ALUMNI NEWS FROM DOWN UNDER: Eleri Harris ‘14 Publishes First Children’s Book

July 7, 2025

We have Australian alumni news! The debut children’s book of Eisner award-winning cartoonist, journalist, and editor Eleri Harris ‘14 is now available—A LOO OF ONE’S OWN. Be on the lookout for its release in the States!

“The fascinating (and sometimes hilarious) story of the first women elected to federal parliament… Award-winning cartoonist Eleri Harris tackles an important moment in Australian history in a humorous and lighthearted way, illuminating themes of equality and accessibility for readers of all ages.”—publisher Allen & Unwin Books

In 1943, the first women were elected to the Australian parliament. While Enid Lyons and Dorothy Tangney differed politically, they soon discovered that they had at least one problem in common: all of the restrooms for elected officials in the Parliament House were “Men’s.”

Based in Australia, Eleri Harris is an Eisner award-winning cartoonist, journalist, and editor. Her non-fiction history, science, and news comics have been exhibited and published worldwide.

DRAWN FROM THE MARGINS: THE POWER OF GRAPHIC JOURNALISM, co-authored by Shay Mirk, is scheduled to be released in November 2025 by Abrams ComicsArt. Eleri was deputy editor and features editor during her tenure at The Nib. She has spoken about the practice and art of non-fiction comics making at conferences in the US, Australia, India, and Peru. She is also a regular guest lecturer in comics journalism at The Center for Cartoon Studies, California College of the Arts, and the University of Technology in Sydney. From 2019 to 2023, Eleri was co-director of the Comic Art Workshop, a grassroots organization supporting remote residencies for ambitious comics projects.

Congratulations, Eleri!
