This fall, The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) will host a series of low-cost ($5), 90-minute webinars that will be open to the public. All proceeds will go to sponsor zine fests around the USA that CCS supports. The webinars will feature CCS alums. Here is the lineup for fall 2026:

Nonfiction Comics with Eleri Harris

ONLINE – OCTOBER 1 – 6:30 – 8pm ET

CCS Alum Eleri Harris (‘14) will lecture about best practices for creating nonfiction comics. Participants will brainstorm ideas for nonfiction comics they can create, and figure out the best first panels to really hook a reader.

Materials: Paper, a pencil & eraser.

Bio: Eleri Harris (she/her) is an Eisner award-winning editor, cartoonist and children’s author currently working on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country in Australia’s national capital.

For a decade Eleri was Features Editor at US-based comics website and magazine, The Nib. Her non-fiction history, science and reportage comics have been exhibited and published all over the world.

Eleri is the coauthor, along with Shay Mirk, of the Eisner nominated book Making Nonfiction Comics: A Guide for Graphic Narrative (Abrams ComicArts 2025). Eleri has spoken about the practice and art of non-fiction comics making at conferences in the US, Australia, India and Peru. Learn more at: https://eleriharris.com/

Humor Comics with Luke Healy

ONLINE – OCTOBER 22 – 6:30 – 8pm ET

Luke Healy (’14) will lecture about the mechanics of joke structure, and universality in humour across all media, with examples from gag comics, sit-coms, stand up and viral videos. Using techniques from the world of improv, Luke will teach participants a streamlined joke-writing process that demystifies idea generation, and gives them a process for writing character-focussed jokes that is simple and repeatable. Never again will you be stuck staring at a blank page asking “what’s funny?” 

Materials: Paper, a pencil & eraser.

Bio: Luke Healy is a cartoonist, comedian and screenwriter from Dublin, Ireland.

Luke is the author of six graphic novels, and many short stories. His books have been translated into five languages, and have been named best of their years by publications like The Guardian, Publishers Weekly, The Washington Post, The Irish Examiner and more.
