CCS alum Melissa Mendes won a Xeric in fall 2010, and her book Freddy Stories is now available for sale on her website! Freddy Stories is an all ages graphic novel about a kid named Freddy and her adventures with her friends and family, including a big hairy dog named Frank and great uncle Sully. Freddy Stories was recently listed as number one in New York Magazine’s Great New Comics About Being a Kid, in Order of Sweetness.
The Xeric award has left a lasting legacy on comics and helped a lot of cartoonists launch their careers. It’s impact on CCS is obvious as many award winners are members of the CCS community including instructors (Jason Lutes and James Sturm), Fellows (Robyn Chapman, Blaise Larmee), and alumni (Colleen Frakes, Alexis Frederick-Frost, Melissa Mendes, Annie Murphy, Alex Kim, Sam Gaskin).
One more grant cycle left so if you ever thought of applying now’s the time. For more info go here.
