Join cartoonists and educators from The Center for Cartoon Studies and Toon Books for an in-depth look at how comics are shaping literacy and visual literacy in the classroom and beyond.

Calling all educators! Join world renowned cartoonists and educators Harry Bliss, Liniers, Françoise Mouly, and James Sturm on a two-day educator’s workshop. We will explore  the ABCs of visual literacy and how comics-powered lesson plans can better engage students at all levels of learning, whatever the subject matter.

This session will be led by CCS director James Sturm whose books for children include The Adventures in Cartooning series and the Toon Books Ape and Armadillo Take Over the World and Birdsong. In addition, James was the series editor of a line of graphic novels about notable Americans including Helen Keller, Thoreau, and Satchel Paige.

Harry Bliss is a cartoonist and cover artist for The New Yorker magazine and award-winning children’s book creator. His books include A Fine, Fine School (written by Newbery award-winning author, Sharon Creech), Which Would You Rather Be? (written by William Steig), and the #1 New York Times bestselling series Diary of a Worm, Diary of a Spider, and Diary of a Fly (written by Doreen Cronin). His Toon Book, Luke on the Loose, was the first book Harry both wrote and illustrated.Ricardo Liniers Siri is best known as the creator of the popular Latin American comic strip Macanudo. American audiences have been introduced to Liniers through his New Yorker covers and Toon Books that include The Big Wet Balloon and Written and Drawn by Henrietta. He was the 2016-17 Center for Cartoon Studies Fellow.
