The Center for Cartoon Studies announces the second year of The Cornish CCS Fellowship Residency

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

White River Junction, Vermont – The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) announces the second year of The Cornish CCS Fellowship Residency. This year, the month-long residency will be held during the stunning fall season and will include a $3000 stipend. The deadline to apply is August 15, 2017.

Located in Cornish, NH, The Cornish CCS Residency is designed to create a focused and inspiring environment for cartoonists to create exceptional work. Cornish is located 16 miles from The Center for Cartoon Studies (VT), in beautiful rural New Hampshire.

This residency is made possible by former CCS board member, cartoonist Harry Bliss, whose work regularly appears in The New Yorker. “I want to attract the best cartoonists working today and create a residency that is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for storytellers who are pushing the boundaries of the medium,” Bliss said.

Create Comics Workshop at CCS

Create Comics Workshop next session: July 24-28!

Create Comics Summer Workshop is a ‘boot camp’ for cartoonists. The 5-day workshop packs in the essentials for producing your own comics. For ages 16+

In Create Comics Workshop you will learn about story structure, page composition, pacing, materials and techniques, character design, environmental drawing, and comic production! Collaborate on a comic anthology that you will self-publish during the workshop. Create Comics summer workshop is for both beginner and advanced students age 16 and over! Come learn about comics!

Ladybroad Ledger, Release Issue #2

The Ladybroad Ledger, Issue #1

This week was the launch of the GoFundMe to print Issue #2 of The Ladybroad Ledger—an anthology newspaper of femme alt cartoonists from Vermont run by Stephanie Zuppo (’15). Issue #1 was released earlier this year and issue #2 is coming out this summer. It is a twice-yearly publication that we all hope to look forward to for a long time.

Downtown and Historic Preservation Conference in White River Junction

The State of Vermont Department of Housing and Community Development presents the Downtown and Historic Preservation Conference on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Barrette Center for the Arts in White River Junction. The conference will highlight White River Junction’s revitalization. ALISON BECHDEL TO BE APPOINTED VERMONT CARTOONIST LAUREATE

With the reading of a resolution on the Vermont State House floor, Alison Bechdel will be appointed Vermont Cartoonist Laureate. Assembly convenes at 1pm

Thursday, April 6, 4pm, at The Center for Cartoon Studies. 

Montpelier, Vermont-Bolton, Vermont resident Alison Bechdel will become Vermont’s third cartoonist laureate on Thursday, April 6, 2017, when she will be recognized on the Vermont State House floor. Vermont is the only state that regularly appoints a cartoonist laureate.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Peter Welch, Vermont’s congressional delegation, said in a joint statement, “We applaud The Center for Cartoon Studies’ choice of Alison Bechdel to serve as Vermont’s next cartoonist laureate. For three decades, Ms. Bechdel’s talents have been well known to Vermonters, and we have proudly watched her achieve the national acclaim she deserves. Her scope of work – from books to Broadway – has added to our national discourse. Congratulations to Alison Bechdel for continuing another unique tradition that sets Vermont apart.”

The Ladybroad Ledger: A new comics newspaper featuring female creators from Vermont

Stephanie Zuppo (’15) and Rachel Lindsay are the driving force behind The Ladybroad Ledger, a free comics newspaper featuring female comics creators from Vermont. The first issue of the newspaper (12 pages) is now being distributed at schools, libraries, and businesses throughout Vermont. Their plan is to put out an issue twice a year. This issue of the black-and-white paper features comics by Rachel Lindsay, Julianna Brazil, Laura Martin (’17), Sandy Bartholomew (’17), Bridget Comeau (’15), Susan Norton, Angela Boyle (’16 – yes, that is me), Kelly Swann (’16), Michelle Sayles, Iona Fox (’15), and Stephanie herself, along with a cover color and short interview with Glynnis Fawkes.

Here’s a new comic about the journey of moving to Vermont to make and teach comics, by The Center for Cartoon Studies faculty and 2008-09 fellow Alec Longstreth. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION debuted at The Society of Illustrators Ten Years of Fellowship at The Center for Cartoon Studies exhibit opening and was a feature comic at MoCCA Fest 2016.
