New Book: The Good Fight by Josh Rosen ’09

The Good Fight by Ted Staunton with art by Josh Rosen released on June 1, 2021. Set in Toronto during the summer of 1933, everyone wants to head to the lake, but a neighborhood association is trying to keep out “undesirables,” and its members patrol wearing silver swastika pins. Sid faces difficult choices as he wrestles with honesty, bigotry, poverty and his role in a gang of pickpockets.

“You Are New” by Lucy Knisley ′09 a New York Times Best Children’s Book of 2019

The New York Times has released its top 25 children’s books of 2019, and You Are New (Chronicle Books) by Lucy Knisley ′09 has been selected. The list includes other great cartoonists such as Dylan Meconis for Queen of the Sea (Walker Books), Sara Varon for Hold Hands (First Second), Raina Telgemeier for Guts (Scholastic), and Ryan Andrews for This Was Our Pact (First Second).

Visiting Artist: Laura Terry

Laura Terry ′10 is the author and illustrator of the graphic novel, Graveyard Shakes (Scholastic Graphix, 2017). As a child, she spent her days in rural Texas raising livestock, playing in the woods, and discovering an intense love for books, particularly those of Neil Gaiman, Roald Dahl, and Ursula K. Le Guin. Laura is a former Xeric Grant winner for Overboard. Laura graduated from Pratt and received her MFA from The Center for Cartoon Studies. Now she works (and plays) as an illustrator and cartoonist in Brooklyn with her tiny poodle, Muffin. She especially loves drawing adorable woodland creatures and fantasy stories involving ghosts. Graphic Novel TK

 

Laura Terry ’10 released Graveyard Shakes with Scholastic in September 2017. Her agent, Bernadette Baker-Baughman from Victoria Sanders & Associates talks to Graphic Novel TK (episode 4: Agents) about the ins and outs of work representing cartoonists. Bernadette also talks about getting the best contract, and working with Laura on approaching publishers with Graveyard Shakes. Graphic Novel TK is a podcast about comic book publishing, co-hosted by Alison Wilgus and Gina Gagliano.

Graveyard Shakes is about sisters Katia and Victoria, scholarship students at a private boarding school. After an argument, Victoria tumbles into the underworld of a nearby graveyard. She meets ghosts and a man name Nikola, who is one ingredient short for his sinister spell. Victoria teams up with Little Ghost and Nikola’s son to search for Katia.

Visiting Artist: Jimmy Gownley

Jimmy Gownley began writing and drawing comics at the age of fifteen. He is an advocate for kids’ comics, having co-founded the organization Kids Love Comics, which works to promote comic books and graphic novels as a valuable tool for literacy and education.  He is known for his Amelia Rules book series, and his newest book The Dumbest Idea Ever!, was released this February by Scholastic.
