Evan Dahm lives in Brooklyn and has been creating and self-publishing fantasy graphic novels since 2006, including Rice Boy and Vattu. He’s also illustrated and published editions of The Wizard of Oz and Moby-Dick, and he’s currently working on a book for First Second Books, called Island Book. On his Patreon, you can follow along as he continues working on projects.

Tillie Walden’s (’16) latest graphic novel, Spinning, recently came out from First Second. In some of her other comics, she included a list of the tools she drew the comic with in the back. But she said it didn’t feel right for Spinning. So I asked her what she used.

Tillie Walden and her newest book, Spinning

Spinning by Tillie Walden (’16) is coming out in just about a week on September 12, 2017. Her fourth graphic novel, this is her first with First Second. She has also published I Love This Part, A City Inside, and The End of Summer with Avery Hill Publishing, released through Retrofit Comics in the United States. It will be coming out to marvelous reviews.

Tillie Walden won two Ignatz Awards at SPX in 2016, a few months after graduating from CCS.

Spotlight Summer Workshop: YA Graphic Novel

August 4, 2017

Every summer, The Center for Cartoon Studies holds a series of week-long workshops. This summer, they have added some new workshops, including the Young Adult Graphic Novel with Jo Knowles and alumn Tillie Walden, July 31-August 4. The week will focus on the specific idiosyncrasies inherent in young adult fiction through lectures and exercises. You will have access to not only the knowledge of these two quality creators but also the printing lab and the Schulz Library.

This Industry Day, The Center for Cartoon Studies was treated to a wide range of industry veterans from agents and editors to publishers. From the big comics publishers, we had our own Robyn Chapman, currently an editor at First Second. Representing the publishing industry news reporters, Calvin Reid is the senior news editor at Publisher’s Weekly, a weekly news magazine about the international book publishing business. Representing the big publishers, Sheila Keenan is a nonfiction editor at Penguin Random House. A comics agent, Tanya McKinnon came from McKinnon McIntyre. And from the independent comics publishers, we had Kevin Czap from Czap Books.

Next Up: Industry Day

In addition to our weekly Visiting Artist Seminar, a special Industry Day event is scheduled every spring. Professionals from the comics industry descend on White River Junction and The Center for Cartoon Studies. The entire day is set aside for the event with guests take part in a panel where the state of the comics industry and publishing are discussed at length. This year’s guests include Robyn Chapman (First Second), Calvin Reid (Publisher’s Weekly), Sheila Keenan (Penguin Random House), Tanya McKinnon (McKinnon McIntyre Literary Agency), Kevin Czap (Czap Books).
