Two Center for Cartoon Studies Graduates Nominated for Eisner Awards

We are honored and excited to announce that two of our The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) grads and current faculty, Robyn Smith ’17 and Tillie Walden ’16, have been nominated for the prestigious Eisner Award! Both are in the running for “The Best Publication for Teens  (ages 13-17).”

Robyn Smith ’17 for WASH DAY DIARIES (Chronicle Books) with writer Jamila Rowser. Robyn is a 2017 graduate of CCS, was a fellow from 2021-22, and is a member of our faculty.

Tillie Walden ’16 Wins an Eisner for Are You Listening?

The Eisner winners were recently announced, and Tillie Walden ’16 won Best Graphic AlbumNew Material for Are You Listening? (First Second), a magical realism story about two women on a road trip through Texas. Bea is on the run and joins Lou in this intimate and emotionally soaring story about friendship, grief, and healing. This is Tillie’s second Eisner. Spinning (First Second, 2017), her coming-of-age memoir about finding her own voice while ice skating and going to an all-girls high school, won the 2018 Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work.

Follow the Doll by Daryl Seitchik ′18

Daryl Seitchik ′18 brought issue 1 of their new comic Follow the Doll to the Comic Arts Brooklyn festival. It will be a painted graphic novel and is inspired by one of the most beloved Slavic folktales, “Vasilisa the Wise”—or “Vasilisa the Beautiful,” or simply, “Vasilisa.” Not an adaptation of the traditional tale, Daryl is attempting to “dig up, reveal, and bring to life the latent content in an old story rich with archetypal meanings.” Keep an eye on their store if they put issue 1 on sale!

Summer Workshop Spotlight: Graphic Novel Workshop with Paul Karasik

Ho to Read Nancy

Summer 2019 you can work with Paul Karasik (How To Read Nancy, City of Glass) to get your own graphic novel off the ground! You’ll have a week, from July 29 to August 2 or August 5 to 9, to produce the first draft of a longer comics project. The course makes use of lecture, collaborative exercises, book discussions and more. And if that week isn’t enough for you, you can sign up for the optional online extension from August 13 to October 4!

“How To Read Nancy” , by Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden, is the deconstruction of a single Nancy comic strip to reveal the hidden language of comics.“How To Read Nancy”  received an Eisner Award 2018: Best Comics-Related Book of the Year!

Visiting Artist: Joe Sacco

Joe Sacco is appearing at the Pulp Culture Comic Arts Festival & Symposium as part of the Burack Distinguished Lecture Series. He was born in Malta and now lives in Portland, Oregon. He is mostly known for his journalistic comic books, which include Palestine (Fantagraphics, 2001), Safe Area Gorazde (Fantagraphics, 2002), and Footnotes in Gaza (Metropolitan Books, 2010). He was won many awards for his journalism comics: 1996 American Book Award, 2001 Guggenheim Fellowship, 2001 Eisner Award, 2009 Los Angeles Times Book Prize nomination, 2010 Ridenhour Book Prize, 2012 Oregon Book Award, and 2014 Oregon Book Award Finalist for Journalism.

Spotlight Summer Workshop: YA Graphic Novel

Every summer, The Center for Cartoon Studies holds a series of week-long workshops. This summer, they have added some new workshops, including the Young Adult Graphic Novel with Jo Knowles and alumn Tillie Walden, July 31-August 4. The week will focus on the specific idiosyncrasies inherent in young adult fiction through lectures and exercises. You will have access to not only the knowledge of these two quality creators but also the printing lab and the Schulz Library.
