Slate and the Center for Cartoon Studies seventh annual Cartoonist Studio Prize

Slate and The Center for Cartoon Studies will once again name the best print and web comic of the year.

Each year the Cartoonist Studio Prize will be awarded to work that exemplifies excellence in cartooning. The creators of two exceptional comics will be awarded $1000 each. Winners will be selected by Slate’s Dan Kois, the faculty and students of The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) represented by current fellow Keren Katz, and this year’s guest judge, Gil Roth creator of The Virtual Memories Show podcast.

Superheroes have been and will be a hot topic in comics. Tom O’Brien (’15) and Allison Bannister (’15) currently have open submissions for Who Is the Silhouette?an anthology that asks the questions “what makes a superhero?” They are exploring their take on superheroes with a mind toward telling tales about diverse characters.

Announcing the Winners of the Fifth Cartoonist Studio Prize

Slate Book Review and The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) are proud to announce the winners of the fifth annual Cartoonist Studio Prize!

The winner for Best Print Comic is Eleanor Davis for Libby’s Dad (Retrofit and Big Planet Comics)

The winner for Best Web Comic is Christina Tran for “On Beauty,” a story about medical tourism in South Korea.

The winners were selected by Slate’s Jacob Brogan; the faculty and students at The Center for Cartoon Studies, represented by Jarad Greene; and this year’s guest judge, Karen Green, curator for comics and cartoons at Columbia University’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Library.

Announcing the Winners of the 2016 Cartoonist Studio Prize

Congratulations to our two winners, who each receive $1,000 and, of course, eternal glory, and join our previous winners: Richard McGuire and Winston Rowntree; Taiyo Matsumoto and Emily Carroll; and Noelle Stevenson and Chris Ware.

The winner of the Best Print Comic prize is Carol Tyler for her momentous Soldier’s Heart: The Campaign to Understand My WWII Veteran Father (Fantagraphics), a collection of Tyler’s three mournful, angry, beautiful memoirs about her dad, Chuck Tyler, his experiences on the European front in World War 2, and the PTSD—or “soldier’s heart”—that affected not just the rest of his life but his daughter Carol’s as well.
SLATE_BOOKS_webcomicThe winner of the Best Web Comic prize is Boulet for his characteristically witty and madcap comic, “I Want to Believe.” The French cartoonist is a three-time nominee in this category and this year came away with the prize.

CCS Alum Wins Two Ignatz Awards!

Congratulations to The Center for Cartoon Studies alum Sophie Goldstein ′13 for winning two Ignatz Awards for The Oven, “Outstanding Graphic Novel” and “Outstanding Comic!” Sophie also received an Ignatz in 2014 for House of Women, Part I.
