1177 BC graphic novel from Glynnis Fawkes

Coming in 2023 from Princeton University Press, Glynnis Fawkes is adapting Eric Cline’s 1177 BC as a graphic novel. Archaeologist Cline’s book traces the downfall of the many interconnected civilizations of the Late Bronze Age. And now Glynnis is bringing it to life: “imagining life in the ancient world, drawing ancient art, and figuring out the tech side of putting this book together.”

Whit Taylor Joins CCS Faculty this Spring

Whit Taylor (Ghost Stories) is joining the faculty at The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) this spring as the facilitator of Visiting Artist Seminar. The course features weekly guests including the most celebrated cartoonists, children’s books authors, designers, writers, and designers. Guests share their creative process and professional pathways. In addition to lecturing at CCS as a previous visiting artist, Whit was also the keynote speaker at the International Comics and Medicine Conference in 2019 (see photo above). A big thanks to R. Sikoryak who facilitated the most recent fall term of Visiting Artist Seminar. His Constitution Illustrated was a top ten The New York Times Best Graphic Novels of 2020.

The Center for Cartoon Studies Faculty Jason Lutes wins Vermont Book Award 2019 for BERLIN

The Center for Cartoon Studies faculty Jason Lutes wins the Vermont Book Award 2019 for his twenty years in the making graphic novel BERLIN.

BERLIN is an intricate look at the fall of the Weimar Republic through the eyes of its citizens—Marthe Müller, a young woman escaping the memory of a brother killed in World War I, Kurt Severing, an idealistic journalist losing faith in the printed word as fascism and extremism take hold; the Brauns, a family torn apart by poverty and politics. Lutes weaves these characters’ lives into the larger fabric of a city slowly ripping apart.

In Stores Now: The Brood by Stephen R. Bissette

The Brood [hardcover] by Stephen R. Bissette

Stephen R. Bissette, beloved CCS faculty, has recently released a new book, Midnight Movie Monograph on The Brood, where he dives into Cronenberg’s movie The Brood. Similar to Bissette’s previous work, Teen Angels and New Mutants, which deconstructs Rick Veitch‘s graphic novel Brat Pack, Bissette takes a forensic and holistic approach to examining the many facets of this dark jewel of horror that he calls Cronenberg’s first masterpiece.

State of the Union: Comics

The Center for Cartoon Studies instructor Jason Lutes (Berlin) was part of a panel discussing the state of comics at the American Library Association (ALA) conference in June. Along with Jaime Hernandez (Love and Rockets) and Raina Telgemeier (The Baby-Sitters Club), the panel was moderated by Amie Wright. They discussed their relationships to their characters, the rise of graphic memoir and biography, using comics to promote literacy, and shelving graphic novels separately or with the rest of the collection. Though there was disagreement among the panel, Jason sees shelving graphic novels in the general collection as a step in the right direction.
