The Center for Cartoon Studies meetups across the country (and abroad!)

We are hosting a bunch of meetups at coffee shops across the country (and abroad!) this November and December. Summer 2016! Graphic Novel Workshop With Paul Karasik

Graphic Novel Workshop:

Session I: August 1-5

Do you have the beginnings of a graphic novel but need some help getting it off the ground? Is your cartooning stuck in a rut, ready to move up to another level?

Put everything else aside and only work on your comics for a week in White River Junction, Vermont. Workshop instructor Paul Karasik is a cartoonist (The New Yorker, City of Glass), a comics scholar (I Shall Destroy All The Civilized Planets, How To Read Nancy), and a renowned teacher who really knows how to take good cartoonists and make them better.

Announcing the Winners of the 2016 Cartoonist Studio Prize

Congratulations to our two winners, who each receive $1,000 and, of course, eternal glory, and join our previous winners: Richard McGuire and Winston Rowntree; Taiyo Matsumoto and Emily Carroll; and Noelle Stevenson and Chris Ware.

The winner of the Best Print Comic prize is Carol Tyler for her momentous Soldier’s Heart: The Campaign to Understand My WWII Veteran Father (Fantagraphics), a collection of Tyler’s three mournful, angry, beautiful memoirs about her dad, Chuck Tyler, his experiences on the European front in World War 2, and the PTSD—or “soldier’s heart”—that affected not just the rest of his life but his daughter Carol’s as well.
SLATE_BOOKS_webcomic The winner of the Best Web Comic prize is Boulet for his characteristically witty and madcap comic, “I Want to Believe.” The French cartoonist is a three-time nominee in this category and this year came away with the prize.

Explore The Center for Cartoon Studies’ collection of comics and graphic novels and browse a special display of books by the legendary Will Eisner at its Schulz Library. The Schulz librarians will be offering guided tours of the library collection. Free comics for those who attend!

A special exhibit of original art from the CCS Archive is also on display in the CCS Gallery.

Midterm Senior Thesis Posters Exhibit

Midterm Thesis Project Posters are on exhibit at The Center for Cartoon Studies in the Colodny Building Gallery, at 94 South Main Street in downtown White River Junction. The posters provide a Midterm synopsis of student projects, featuring artwork and details on the intended final project.

On display during White River Junction’s First Friday, December 5, 5-7pm.

Next Up Visiting Artist: Josh Neufeld

Josh Neufeld is a cartoonist who works primarily in the field of nonfiction comics, specifically as a comics journalist. Josh is the writer/artist of the Eisner and Harvey Award-nominated A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge, and the Xeric Award-winning graphic travelogue A Few Perfect Hours (and Other Stories from Southeast Asia & Central Europe). He is also the illustrator of the New York Times bestseller The Influencing Machine: Brook Gladstone On the Media. A longtime artist for Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor, and Josh’s art has been exhibited in gallery and museum shows in the United States and Europe.

In a war between the two, which side should mankind side with? This week’s 12-panel pitch cartoon feature, Vampires vs. Zombies, is drawn by Connor Willumsen, one of the great young cartoonists working today, and written by 12 Panel Pitch’s very own Sasha Steinberg.

The Center for Cartoon Studies Archive

From the comic strip to the comic book to the graphic novel, The Center for Cartoon Archive includes all kinds of original cartoon art. Whether its work by Alison Bechdel, Jamie Hernandez, Chris Ware, Harry Lucey, Richard Thompson, Will Eisner, or Ernie Bushmiller, the collection is a vital part of CCS’s curriculum, regularly brought into the classroom and exhibited to inspire the next generation of cartoonists. If you are interested in donating original art we would encourage that conversation. Inquiries can be made to studio@cartoonstudies.org. The Center for Cartoon Studies is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization.
