For Anna Sellheim ’16 the act of making comics is therapeutic

Anna Sellheim ’16 has been spotlighted on Graphic Medicine, a website promoting the “use of comics in medical education and patient care.” Anna has publishing autobio comics about her mental health in a series called Everything’s Fine. Though they started as doodles in a sketchbook, she polished them up and drew them in color for some class assignments at CCS. Then she compiled them into small zines. These grew into the ongoing web comic. In the Graphic Medicine spotlight, she writes about how she got into comics and why she has continued creating her mental health–themed autobio comic.

Dirty Diamonds Anthology with Anna McGlynn ′15, Anna Sellheim ′16, and Bridget Comeau ′15

Dirty Diamonds #10: Death, the final issue of the all-girl comic anthology, is up on Kickstarter until February 14. This comics and artwork from seventy creators from six different countries, including CCS graduates Anna McGlynn ′15, Anna Sellheim ′16, and Bridget Comeau ′15. The autobio stories explore different facets of death. Dirty Diamonds is edited and published by Kelly Phillips (Weird Me) and Claire Folkman.

CCS graduates to exhibit and present at MICE expo in Cambridge

MICE, the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo, is coming up on October 19 and 20 in Cambridge, MA. A perennial favorite, MICE is showcase space for artists and writers in the greater-Boston area working in the field of comics. The show is free and open to the public of all ages. And you can find lots of CCS grads and instructors tabling and in various workshops throughout the weekend.

CCS at Denver Independent Comics and Art Expo

 

DiNK, the Denver Independent Comics and Art Expo, coming around again, on April 13–14. Everything Is Fine Anna by Anna Sellheim ′16

Anna Sellheim ’16 creates the web comic Everything Is Fine and helps run Square City Comics, a comic collective in the DC area. She did the following interview with Angela Boyle ’16.

What is your favorite thing to teach about comics?

My favorite thing to teach about comics is the various ways you can get your characters to emote. Whether that’s facial expressions, body language, or use of emanata (one of my fave lessons is teaching emanata). My comics are all about characters and emotions, so I love helping students learn how to make their characters express themselves.

Everything is Fine: autobio comics on life-long struggles with anxiety and depression

Anna Sellheim ’16 is working on her web comic Everything Is Fine and helps run Square City Comics, a comic collective in the DC area.

The group at Square City Comics meets up once a month to help each other create and self-publish their original comics. They join up for a weekly online sketch group. They run an anthology together and you will often find them tabling together at conventions. Current membership stands at over 100 members!
