A new step by step comic to teach kids how to Grow a Garden by CCS alumni Alexis Frederick-Frost

Alexis Frederick-Frost ’07 created a graphic novel for First Second’s Maker Comics series with six gardening projects. Maker Comics: Grow a Garden is out now! You’ll follow along with Will, Violet, and Basil at the Garden Gnome Academy. Will and his friends learn about soil and compost. To follow along, you don’t need a big backyard—just a little bit of space and a lot of sunlight.

CCS schedule and exhibitors at Small Press Expo 2019

Here is a line up for CCS at SPX 2019!:

The Small Press Expo (SPX) is coming up on September 14 -15, and there are plenty of ways to see The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) grads while you are there! CCS will be present at table W28 with copies of This Is What Democracy Looks Like.

As part of the tour for This Is What Democracy Looks Like, Dan Nott ′18 (Table A7) will be on the Graphic Advocacy panel with Archie Bongiovanni (A Quick & Easy Guide To They/Them Pronouns), Box Brown (Cannabis), and Matt Bors (The Nib). Hallie Jay Pope will be the moderator. The group will discuss using comics as a powerful tool in sharing a particular mission and point of view.

The Center for Cartoon Studies alum and Eisner-award-winning graphic novelist Joseph Lambert  piece in Fairy Tale Comics is an adaptation from Dora Lee Newman’s retelling of the traditional American folktale “Br’er Rabbit Won’t Help,” in which the titular trickster gets his just desserts from the other animals of the forest.

Alum Alexis Frederick-Frost presenter at 2010 Boston Book Festival

Alexis Frederick-Frost is a graduate of the Master of Fine Arts program at the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont.  His book, Adventures in Cartooning: How to Turn Your Doodles Into Comics, written with James Sturm and CCS graduate Andrew Arnold, was the recipient of numerous awards, including Booklist’s Top Ten Art Books for Kids, School Library Journal’s Best Book of the Year, and theLibrary Media Connection’s “Best of the Best.”

The Boston Book Festival (BBF) will take place October 16.
