Summer is a great time for cartooning adventures! Brush up on some skills, learn new ones, or discover the world of cartooning for the first time ever. This summer we're offering a new line up of options for ages 16+, including a college level workshop, Cartooning Studio, the short version of a keystone course in CCS's curriculum, taught by CCS faculty, and special Extended Studio options for those with projects that need a little extra time.

CREATE COMICS | July 13-17
Ages 16+

Back by popular demand, Create Comics Summer Workshop, considered a ‘boot camp’ for cartoonists, ideal for ages 16+. The 5-day workshop packs in the essentials for producing your own comics. This year faculty includes Steve Bissette (Taboo, Swamp Thing), Robyn Chapman (Hey! Four eyes!), Alec Longstreth (Phase 7) and more!

The Create Comics Workshop covers all the basics of creating and self-publishing comic books. Through lectures, exercises, and group projects, students learn about story structure, page composition, pacing, materials and techniques, character design, environmental drawing, and production. Students collaborate on a comic anthology that they self-publish during the workshop. Create Comics is for both beginner and advanced students age 16 and over.

Cartooning Studio is a 5-day cartooning intensive, ideal for adults and college students (with a for-credit option). Through lectures and classroom exercises, CCS faculty will cover the basics of visual storytelling. There will be a strong focus on designing, crafting and self-publishing comics. This is a goal-orientated workshop in which students are given the support necessary to create and self-publish their own independent project.

Cartooning Studio participants will have 24-hour access to studio space and the CCS Production Lab, allowing them to extend their experience beyond scheduled class time. Apple laptops, equipped with essential programs like Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, will be available for check out. Registration fees include black & white and color printing and copying, screen printing lab access, a pad of paper from Strathmore’s new sequential art line, and more.

CCS will offer optional evening classes and tutoring sessions, allowing students to tailor their learning experience.

Extended Studio Options

This year, we’ve added an Extended Studio Option after both Create Comics and Cartooning Studio. These additional 3-day workshops are by application only, designed for students who wish to extend their time at CCS working on independent projects under the guidance of faculty, with full access to CCS resources such as studio space, the production lab, and the Schulz Library.

Summer 2008 Faculty

Stephen R. Bissette won many industry awards in his quarter-century in
comics as a cartoonist, writer, editor and publisher. A pioneer graduate of
the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon & Graphic Art, he is best-known for Saga of
the Swamp Thing, Taboo, '1963,' Tyrant
, co-creating John Constantine, and
creating the world's second '24- Hour Comic,' invented by Scott McCloud as a
challenge for Bissette. His comics efforts fueled many films, (CONSTANTINE,
FROM HELL, TMNT II: SECRET OF THE OOZE,
etc.) and he and his son Daniel
created the comic that appears in the award-winning indy feature HEAD
TRAUMA
. He illustrates books and has authored fiction (including the Stoker
Award-winning novella Aliens: Tribes) and non-fiction (co-authoring Comic
Book Rebels, The Monster Book: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
, and solo
articles/essays for film books, magazines and his own book series Green
Mountain Cinema
). His previous work in education includes lecturing at Yale,
Dartmouth College, Duquesne University, Smith College, Marlboro College,
etc., and Middlebury College's Breadloaf Young Writers Workshop. His papers
reside in the Special Collections of HUIE Library at Henderson State
University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Nick Bertozzi received a Xeric Grant and multiple Harvey Awards and Ignatz Awards for his smart and human cartooning. He is the author of The Salon, a graphic novel about Picasso, the discovery of Cubism, and magical absinthe. He collaborated with Jason Lutes on the cartoon-biography Houdini: The Handcuff King, drew Glen (the Colbert Report) Eichler’s forthcoming Stuffed! and for the past several years he has been teaching cartooning at New York City’s School of Visual Arts. Nick will be teaching in the Create Comics Workshop this year!

Jon Chad graduated from the Sequential Art program at the Savannah College of Art and Design in May 2008. He has been producing handmade minicomics and zines since 2006. He has illustrated children's books published by Mascot Books. His comics Leo Geo Acquires Ancient Knowledge and Shortstack were both nominated for the Kukoc Award for Comics Inspiration in 2008. He now lives in White River Junction where he works at The Center for Cartoon Studies.

Since receiving her BFA in Sequential Art, Robyn Chapman has been independently producing, publishing and printing her own comics and zines. In 2000 she received a Xeric Grant for her first comic, Theater of the Meek. Robyn's work has been featured in several anthologies and publications, including Scheherazade, Stuck in the Middle, and the NY Metro. In 2004 Robyn was a featured cartoonist in the Comics Journal's young cartoonist issue. In 2005 Robyn became CCS’s first fellow, in 2008 they awarded her with an MFA. In addition to CCS, Robyn has taught cartooning in after-school programs, workshops, and at the New School in New York City.

Since 2002, Alec Longstreth has been self-publishing his subscription-based comic book PHASE 7, winner of the 2005 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Minicomic. He is also the mastermind behind The Dvorak Zine, an educational comic promoting the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard Layout. Alec’s illustrations and gag cartoons have been commissioned by such clients as Nickelodeon Magazine, National Geographic for Kids, and Scholastic, among others. Alec recently relocated to White River Junction, VT, for a fellowship at The Center for Cartoon Studies. He is currently working on Basewood, his first graphic novel.

J ason Lutes is the cartoonist responsible for the critically acclaimed Jar of Fools, which was serialized in the weekly paper The Stranger. He is currently working on the ambitious historical graphic novel Berlin. His other works include The Fall with Ed Brubaker and Houdini the Handcuff King with Nick Bertozzi.

Each year, CCS partners with local, regional, and national nonprofit organizations to provide full and partial summer workshop scholarships for students who could not otherwise attend.

To be considered for a scholarship, please submit a copy of your 2008 federal income tax return along with your registration materials. Daily Schedule
During Create Comics and Cartooning Studio, class time runs from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm daily. Breaks will be offered throughout the day, including a one-hour lunch break. There will be optional student activities planned each evening. A detailed class agenda will be provided at the start of the workshop.

Students continuing on for the Extended Studio will have 24/7 access to our studio space and production lab, as well as scheduled meetings with their faculty advisors.

The Schulz Library will be open to students enrolled in the summer workshop. Lending privileges are provided to participants in Cartooning Studio and the Extended Studio Option.

Supplies
Bring a sketchbook and your favorite pens and pencils. We'll supply paper and basic tools. Several art supply stores are located nearby, and the Hotel Coolidge gift shop sells basic cartooning supplies.


Meals
A continental breakfast, catered lunch, and healthy snacks are provided as part of the Summer Workshops. Several restaurants, cafes, and stores are located within walking distance from CCS and the Hotel Coolidge.
