Toronto Comic Arts Festival Featured Guests from CCS

TCAF Featured Guests Tillie Walden and Lucy Knisley

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is May 10-12, and this year two graduates from The Center for Cartoon Studies are featured guests: Tillie Walden ′16 and Lucy Knisley ′09.

Tillie Walden is a Featured Young Adult Guest, showcasing her comic On a Sunbeam (First Second, 2018) which recently won an LA Times Book Prize. Set in a boarding school, this sci-fi comic follows two girls who meet in boarding school and fall in love; and a crew that travels to deep space to repair beautiful, dilapidated buildings. With intertwining storylines, we see the characters learning to cope with loss. On a Sunbeam was originally published as a webcomic.

Lucy Knisley is a Featured Kids Guest, showcasing her comic Kid Gloves (First Second, 2019). In this memoir, Lucy talks about her troubles getting, and staying, pregnant. And about the joy and work of finally struggling through “nine months of careful chaos.”

At the Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) this May 12-13, Melanie Gillman ′12 and former CCS fellow Liniers are both feature guests along with Inio Asano (Goodnight Punpun, VIZ Media, 2016), Vera Brosgol (Leave Me Alone, Roaring Book Press, 2016), Emily Carroll (Through the Woods, Margaret K McElderry Books, 2014), Michael DeForge (Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero, Drawn and Quarterly, 2017), Hope Larson (Mercury, Atheneum Books, 2010), Jillian Tamaki (Super Mutant Magic Academy, Drawn and Quarterly, 2015), Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer [writer], First Second, 2010), and Jen Wang (The Prince and the Dressmaker, First Second, 2018).

Doug Wright Nominee: Rebecca Roher

Bird in a Cage by Rebecca Roher

For the Doug Wright Awards this year, Rebecca Roher (’15) has been nominated for the Best Book Award for Bird in a Cage, published by Conundrum Press. Originally published in The Nib, the minicomic won the Expozine Award. Conundrum Press gave Rebecca the opportunity to expand on the original comic into a graphic novel.

Dakota McFadzean ′12 wins Doug Wright Award!

The best in Canadian comics and graphic novels were recognized May 14 at the 2016 Doug Wright Awards for Canadian Cartooning in Toronto, including The Center for Cartoon Studies alum Dakota McFadzean for Don’t Get Eaten By Anything, Patrick Kyle, and Michael Deforge.

Congratulations also to alum Rebecca Roher ′15 who was nominated for Mom Body!

The Doug Wright Awards is a feature event of the Toronto Comics Arts Festival (TCAF), the 12th annual Wright Awards were held in downtown Toronto. The evening featured special appearances by R. Sikoryak (Raw, Masterpiece Comics), special guest presenters Seth, Chester Brown, Jeet Heer, Heidi McDonald, Chris Kuzma, Maurice Vellekoop, Nathalie Atkinson, and Betty Liang.

Rebecca Roher ′16 Nominated for Doug Wright Award!

Alum Rebecca Roher was nominated for the 2016 Doug Wright Spotlight Award (a.k.a. “The Nipper”) for Mom Body (The Nib). The Cartoonist Studio Prize

Each year the Cartoonist Studio Prize will be awarded to work that exemplifies excellence in cartooning. The creators of two exceptional comics (Graphic Novel, Web Comic) will be awarded $1000 each. Winners will be selected by Slate Book Review editor Dan Kois,  the faculty and students of The Center for Cartoon Studies, and a distinguished guest judge. This year’s guest judge will be Christopher Butcher of the world-famous comic book store The Beguiling and co-founder of the Toronto Comic Arts Festival.
