Two Center for Cartoon Studies Graduates Nominated for Eisner Awards

We are honored and excited to announce that two of our The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) grads and current faculty, Robyn Smith ’17 and Tillie Walden ’16, have been nominated for the prestigious Eisner Award! Both are in the running for “The Best Publication for Teens (ages 13-17).”

Robyn Smith ’17 for WASH DAY DIARIES (Chronicle Books) with writer Jamila Rowser. Robyn is a 2017 graduate of CCS, was a fellow from 2021-22, and is a member of our faculty.

Appointment of Vermont Cartoonist Laureate Rick Veitch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: On Thursday, April 2, 2020, West Townshend, Vermont resident Rick Veitch will be appointed Vermont’s fourth cartoonist laureate during a live stream event. Veitch was to be recognized on the Vermont Statehouse floor and meet with Vermont Governor Phil Scott on April 2, but that will be rescheduled due to the pandemic. Vermont is the only state that regularly appoints a cartoonist laureate.

Will Eisner Week (March 1-7, 2020) is an annual celebration honoring the legacy of Will Eisner, champion of the graphic novel. This international event is dedicated to promoting graphic novel literacy, free speech, and the sequential arts.

3 CCS Top ALA YA Graphic Novel List!

The American Association of Librarians has posted a list of the 2018 top ten graphic novels for youth in Booklist Online. Three from The Center for Cartoon Studies made the list!

Melanie Gillman ′13 already won the Stonewall Award from ALA for As the Crow Flies Vol. 1 (Iron Circus Comics), so it comes as no surprise that this comic is also in the top ten YA graphic novels. From the ALA post:

Lush, warm colored-pencil artwork relates the story of 13-year-old Charlie, a queer black girl who struggles with her faith—as well as outdated concepts and whitewashed history—on an all-girls hiking trip.

CCS International ComiCon Special Guests: Recent fellow Liniers and alum Tillie Walden

Both Liniers, CCS fellow 2016–17, and Tillie Walden ’16 are going to be special guests at the 2018 International ComiCon in San Diego. With one and two Eisner nominations this year, respectively, they are bound to have a wonderful time.

Alum Spotlight: Eisner nominations 2018

Eisner nominations are out and we must send out congratulations our CCS alums!

Liniers, CCS fellow 2016–17, is nominated for Good Night, Planet with Toon Books for Best Publication for Early Readers (up to age 8). For ages 4 and up, the story explores what your toys do when you’re sleeping.

Tillie Walden ’16 for Spinning, which is nominated for Best Publication for Teens (ages 13–17) and for Best Reality-Based Work. Spinning is about Tillie’s time as a figure skater, all through high school, where she comes of age, comes out, and comes into her own.

Let’s also give a shout out for Charles M. Schulz whose Celebrating Snoopy (Andrews McMeel) is up for Best Archival Collection / Project—Strips. The Schulz family provided the funds for CCS to start the excellent Schulz Library.

CCS Diplomas across the Years

Every year, The Center for Cartoon Studies gets a different artist to draw the dipoloma for their graduates. The artist is kept a secret until the actual graduation ceremony when it is unveiled with the honorary degree is given to that year’s graduation speaker. Diploma drawing above by Eleanor Davis.

Using the power of comics to teach teens about the way our government works This Is What Democracy Looks Like, A Graphic Guide To Governance is a 32-page comic book created by The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS). This short comic guide helps to bring democracy back to the hands of the people by explaining what democracy actually means and how the whole thing works. This guide will be a great jumping-off point to learn about our government.
