CCS schedule and exhibitors at Small Press Expo 2019

Here is a line up for CCS at SPX 2019!:

The Small Press Expo (SPX) is coming up on September 14 -15, and there are plenty of ways to see The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) grads while you are there! CCS will be present at table W28 with copies of This Is What Democracy Looks Like.

As part of the tour for This Is What Democracy Looks Like, Dan Nott ′18 (Table A7) will be on the Graphic Advocacy panel with Archie Bongiovanni (A Quick & Easy Guide To They/Them Pronouns), Box Brown (Cannabis), and Matt Bors (The Nib). Hallie Jay Pope will be the moderator. The group will discuss using comics as a powerful tool in sharing a particular mission and point of view.

Peanuts Studio Welcomes More CCS Alums!

Congratulations to Bryan Stone ′08 and Mary Shyne ′18 on joining the PEANUTS family. Bryan Stone was recently hired by another CCS alum, Donna Almendrala ′12. He joins Mary Shyne and classmate Denis St. John ′08, who are both staff artists.

Peanuts Wins an Eisner for Three Alum

In more Eisner news, Celebrating Snoopy won the Eisner for Best Archival Collection / Project Comic Strips. This is great not only for our late, great library benefactor, Charles Schulz, after whom the Schulz Library is named, but also for the Center for Cartoon Studies alum who worked on this project as assistant editors: Donna Alemdrala ′12, Denis St. John ′08, and Nomi Kane ′11.

Fresh from Denis St. John (′08), The Land of Many Monsters: And Many More Monster Tails is now available from WK Books. This 112-page collection is filled with his short horror comics from the last few years. Stephen R. Bissette (Swamp Thing, penciller) wrote a lengthy and funny foreword.

Denis St. John Offers Cartooning Workshops for Vermont’s Big Read


Denis St. John (CCS ′08) has brought his cartooning workshops to high school classrooms all over Vermont as part of the national Big Read program.  CCS has partnered with Northern Stage to offer Big Read programming that focuses on book The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien.  In his lesson, Denis compare O’Brien’s collection of Vietnam War stories to the comics of Bernie Krigstien, Art Spiegelman and Will Eisner.
