Slate and The Center for Cartoon Studies will once again name the best print and webcomic of the year

Each year the Cartoonist Studio Prize will be awarded to work that exemplifies excellence in cartooning. The creators of two exceptional comics will be awarded $1000 each. Winners will be selected by Slate’s Dan Kois, the faculty and students of The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS), and this year’s guest judge, Candida Rifkind President of the Comics Studies Society and co-editor of the new Wilfrid Laurier UP book series Crossing Lines: Transcultural/Transnational Comics Studies. The deadline to enter is January 31.

Slate and the Center for Cartoon Studies seventh annual Cartoonist Studio Prize

Slate and The Center for Cartoon Studies will once again name the best print and web comic of the year.

Each year the Cartoonist Studio Prize will be awarded to work that exemplifies excellence in cartooning. The creators of two exceptional comics will be awarded $1000 each. Winners will be selected by Slate’s Dan Kois, the faculty and students of The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) represented by current fellow Keren Katz, and this year’s guest judge, Gil Roth creator of The Virtual Memories Show podcast.

The Winners of the Cartoonist Studio Prize

The Slate Book Review and The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) are proud to announce the winners of the third annual Cartoonist Studio Prize. The winners were selected by Slate Book Review editor Dan Kois; the faculty and students at The Center for Cartoon Studies, represented by CCS fellow Sophie Yanow; and this year’s guest judge, cartoonist Paul Karasik.

The winner of the Best Print Comic prize is Richard McGuire for Here, a decades-in-the-making, centuries-spanning epic of time and space, as seen through the complete history of a single room in a single house. Published by Pantheon.

The winner of the Best Web Comic prize is Winston Rowntree for Watching, a beautiful, detailed story of time travelers observing life in the present day.

Each year the Cartoonist Studio Prize will be awarded to two cartoonists whose work exemplifies excellence in cartooning. (Last year’s winners: Richard McGuire and Winston Rowntree.) The creators of two exceptional comics will be awarded $1,000 each. Winners will be selected by Slate Book Review editor Dan Kois, the faculty and students of The Center for Cartoon Studies, and a distinguished guest judge. CCS Industry Day

Industry Day is an annual event that introduces CCS students to top industry professionals including publishers, editors, designers and critics.  Students attend a panel discussion followed by one-on-one reviews with the pros. This year’s line up includes: Andrew Arnold is a book designer for the children’s book company Roaring Brook Press. Holly Bemiss is an agent at the Susan Rabiner Literary Agency. Peggy Burns is the Associate Publisher of the world renowned, Montreal-based graphic novel and comics arts company Drawn & QuarterlyDan Kois is the senior editor at the Slate Book Review. Tucker Stone is a comic critic and blogger, most notably for The Comics Journal and the US Sales and Marketing Director for Nobrow.
