New Book: Flash Forward

The podcast Flash Forward (Abrams), where Rose Eveleth tackles speculative fact and fiction, is being laid to paper with the aid of a crew of artists, including The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) alum Sophie Goldstein ’13, Amelia Onorato ’12, and many CCS visiting artists including Matt Lubchanksy, Ben Passmore, John Jennings, Sophia Foster-Dimino, and Box Brown. The collection includes many more contributors including Ziyed Ayoub, Maki Naro, Julia Gfrörer, Chris Jones, Blue Delliquanti, Zach Weinersmith, and Kate Sheridan. The book will be available on April 20, 2021!

Here is a line up for CCS at SPX 2019!:

The Small Press Expo (SPX) is coming up on September 14 -15, and there are plenty of ways to see The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) grads while you are there! CCS will be present at table W28 with copies of This Is What Democracy Looks Like.

As part of the tour for This Is What Democracy Looks Like, Dan Nott ′18 (Table A7) will be on the Graphic Advocacy panel with Archie Bongiovanni (A Quick & Easy Guide To They/Them Pronouns), Box Brown (Cannabis), and Matt Bors (The Nib). Hallie Jay Pope will be the moderator. The group will discuss using comics as a powerful tool in sharing a particular mission and point of view.

Pulp Culture Comics Arts Festival and Symposium

October 19-21, 2017, the Pulp Culture Comic Arts Festival and Symposium will present a series of five panels throughout the day that explore different aspects of nonfiction cartooning. Drawing together cartoonists, writers, and academics, including CCS faculty and alum, the hour-long panels will foster a rich dialog between panelists and audience. Panels will be held in the Fleming Auditorium (Room 101) in the Fleming Museum, just downstairs from the Cartoonist Exhibition Hall.

You can see multiple current and former teachers on different panels. Sophie Yanow, the newest addition to the teaching staff at The Center for Cartoon Studies as well as a student and a fellow there (she’s done it all), recently released her third graphic novel, What Is a Glacier? Jason Lutes, one of many beloved figures at CCS, is working away at Berlin, releasing issue 21 last year. James Kochalka was a teacher, wrote the CCS fight song, and later became the first Vermont Cartoonist Laureate. Marek Bennett, former applied cartooning adviser, continues his work with summer workshops combining comics, music, and education.

Box Brown is an Ignatz Award winning cartoonist, illustrator and comic publisher from Philadelphia. His book Andre the Giant: Life and Legend, released in 2014, spent three weeks on The New York Times Graphic Novel Best Sellers List. He launched the comics publishing house Retrofit Comics in 2011, where they make use of a subscription service for readers to get comics all year. Retrofit Comics is dedicated to publishing and distributing floppy alternative comics.
