New: The Applied Cartooning Lab

White River Junction, Vermont –The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) has launched its Applied Cartooning Lab beginning this Fall with a dedicated space on South Main Street and a new website that features comic projects ranging from civics to mental health.

The Applied Cartooning Lab works with organizations in Vermont and throughout the country to create unique educational resources and public education campaigns. “Since CCS opened its doors it’s been using comics to engage with the community and present complex issues and systems with clarity and style,” says James Sturm, the Applied Cartooning Lab’s director and cofounder of CCS, “the dedicated Lab will allow us to broaden and deepen the impact of our work.”

Comic Books Lead To Literacy

The Center for Cartoon Studies’ most recent applied cartooning comic book, How We Read: A Graphic Guide to Literacy is a charming, playful, and fascinating 32-page comic that answers these questions and more.

How We Read: A Graphic Guide to Literacy was written and drawn by The Center for Cartoon Studies graduate Daryl Seitchik, a cartoonist and teacher currently living in Vermont. She has taught comics workshops for children, teens, and adults throughout New England and has enjoyed expanding her reach through virtual classes on Zoom.

International Comics and Medicine Conference Comes to Vermont and New Hampshire

Academic conference to be hosted by The Center for Cartoon Studies with support by Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College

August 16-18, 2018

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION (VT), March 19, 2018– The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) is proud to announce the 9th International Comics and Medicine Conference to be held at The Center for Cartoon Studies campus and at nearby Dartmouth College. Previous conferences have been held in London, Chicago, Toronto, Brighton, Seattle, and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Graphic Medicine explores the intersections of comics and healthcare. This year’s theme, “The Ways We Work” invites participants to share and reflect upon how Graphic Medicine is being practiced in public healthcare centers, classrooms, home studios, private clinics, libraries, and bedsides. The conference begins with an evening event held Thursday, August 16, and then consists of two days of a mix of peer-reviewed academic papers, lectures, and workshops.

Download a digital copy of the When I Returned, a comic book featuring stories by local veterans drawn by The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) students and alumni. Edited and designed by James Lunt ’16 and Kelly Swann ’16 with a cover by Noah Van Sciver (CCS Fellow, 2015-16 ).

When I Returned is a Cartoonist and Veteran Project made in collaboration with The Center for Cartoon Studies and The VA Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont.

The Cartoonist Veteran Project is funded in part with support from The National Endowment for the Arts.
