Andrew Arnold’s ’07 Harper Alley has launched!

Andrew Arnold ’07 has been hard at work on launching HarperAlley. This collaborative, creator-focused publisher creates graphic novels for kids and teens that connect with readers of all ages. Andrew is the founder and editorial director of this HarperCollins’s graphic novel imprint. In addition to his history as editor at First Second, he is an author-illustrator and co-creator of the award-winning Adventures in Cartooning series . And he has a picture book What’s the Matter, Marlo? coming out from Roaring Brook Press.

Alum Spotlight: Andrew Arnold ’07

The Center for Cartoon Studies graduate Andrew Arnold ’07 started up HarperAlley, a new graphic novel imprint at HarperCollins Children’s Books. He is also working on his debut picture book, What’s the Matter, Marlo?, coming out in the January of 2021 from Roaring Brook Press. From 2016 to 2019, he was the art director at First Second Books, where he art directed and designed books. Since graduating from The Center for Cartoon Studies, he has collaborated with James Sturm and CCS graduate Alexis Frederick-Frost on the Adventures in Cartooning series. They’re currently developing the eighth book in that series, tentatively titled Build a World.

A new step by step comic to teach kids how to Grow a Garden by CCS alumni Alexis Frederick-Frost

Alexis Frederick-Frost ’07 created a graphic novel for First Second’s Maker Comics series with six gardening projects. Maker Comics: Grow a Garden is out now! You’ll follow along with Will, Violet, and Basil at the Garden Gnome Academy. Will and his friends learn about soil and compost. To follow along, you don’t need a big backyard—just a little bit of space and a lot of sunlight.

Andrew Arnold ′07 Heading Harper Alley

Andrew Arnold ′07, editorial director of HarperAlley.

Andrew Arnold ′07 is the editorial director for a new line of graphic novels under HarperCollins for Harper Alley. They are a “collaborative, creator-focused publisher” specializing in graphic novels for “readers of all ages.” They plan to release about ten books per year, with their first graphic novel is coming out in 2020. Previously, Andrew was the art director and acquiring editor at First Second.

Congratulations Andrew! We look forward to seeing your guidance bring forth many graphic novels to come.

Andrew Arnold (′07) is currently an associate art director at First Second.

You’ve been Associate Art Director at First Second for a year now. What has been your favorite book to work on so far?

The Prince and the Dressmaker! Jen Wang’s artwork is beautiful and the story is so tender. It’s an instant classic!

What has been your favorite moment at First Second?

Attending San Diego Comic Con for the first time! It was all I hoped it would be . . . and more!

What project are you looking forward to most at the moment?

Acquiring my first graphic novel by cartoonist Tim Probert. The project is a middle-grade fantasy adventure that follows the story of two friends trying to save the world. Tim’s artwork is expressive and rich; it’s going to be something special.

CCS Industry Day

Industry Day is an annual event that introduces CCS students to top industry professionals including publishers, editors, designers and critics.  Students attend a panel discussion followed by one-on-one reviews with the pros. This year’s line up includes: Andrew Arnold is a book designer for the children’s book company Roaring Brook Press. Holly Bemiss is an agent at the Susan Rabiner Literary Agency. Peggy Burns is the Associate Publisher of the world renowned, Montreal-based graphic novel and comics arts company Drawn & Quarterly. Dan Kois is the senior editor at the Slate Book Review. Tucker Stone is a comic critic and blogger, most notably for The Comics Journal and the US Sales and Marketing Director for Nobrow.

The Center for Cartoon Studies alum and Eisner-award-winning graphic novelist Joseph Lambert  piece in Fairy Tale Comics is an adaptation from Dora Lee Newman’s retelling of the traditional American folktale “Br’er Rabbit Won’t Help,” in which the titular trickster gets his just desserts from the other animals of the forest.
